Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Tell me you don’t understand technology without saying you don’t understand technology. Biometrics don’t leave Apple devices. Proof? Go get an old touch iPhone and set up a fingerprint and then try to use that to log in to a MacBook with Touch ID.

You can educate him without being insulting.

Or maybe better if op could spend 5 minutes to do their research before posting inaccurate claims.

tbf the same could be said about tyler

Probably he or she is simplifying the explanation because shared biometrics login doesn’t necessarily indicate that biometrics is stored locally.

But it’s true that no cloud nor third party involved in storing biometrics information.

how do you know?

my point is there is no way to know that. you can believe things, but that may or may not be the case.

That what apple says.

No body can confirm without reviewing iOS source code.

Edit: spelling correction

then I have a bridge to sell you. you just need to register on our website. register to the raffle too with your address and phone number and you may win the bridge for free, but don't worry we value your privacy.

that's what I say. surely it's all honest and true. you will have to believe us, because nobody can confirm it.

You are right, sorry about that. Just tired of people spreading bullshit and then by the time the truth gets said the lies have gone halfway around the world. People need to verify stuff before posting their every thought and whim.

I understand, thanks for being a sport. And I agree with you, we are overwhelmed with rumors, lies, and propaganda all the time so it's hard to stick to facts. In the case of op here, they were just trying to share an idea they had, and I've been in their position many times when I sounded like an ignorant schmuck when I just wanted to express a thought i had.

That is absolutely not proof that apple doesn't harvest your data. It's just proof that they don't sync that data between devices.

iOS is a closed-source black box on proprietary hardware, and there's absolutely nothing preventing them from just taking that data and not telling anyone. It might not be nearly as invasive as the age verification BS, but it's definitely not nothing.

There is something preventing them, they publish their Secure Enclave design and there are plenty of studies showing it doesn’t leave the device. (This is the same for Microsoft too, this isn’t me being nice to apple). I don’t feel the need to explain every minute detail to someone that clearly doesn’t know the first thing about technology though, so a simple comment with “proof” that someone who thinks those kinds of things will easily understand is enough.

how ironic. that's not a proof at all. it not being usable on your other devices does not mean it is not uploaded. it just means the data is not synced to other devices for this specific purpose. we simply don't and cannot know whether it is uploaded anywhere.

You are right, it’s not proof! I was waiting for someone like you to say so, so I could point out that this has been tested numerous times by researchers and it does stay on device and is secure, that’s literally the entire point of a TPM.
