Bam Adebayo vs the DPOY ladder

Source

Current DPOY Ladder (Bovada):

  • Rudy Gobert +550

  • Victor Wembanyama +750

  • Evan Mobley +800

  • Jaren Jackson Jr. +800

  • Anthony Davis +1000

The point of this post is to illustrate that not only is Bam Adebayo being overlooked in DPOY yet again — but also that he is completely cooking these elite defenders when playing them head to head.

Listing box score stats to back up a DPOY case is the most meaningless shit. There are no two stats more misleading than raw blocks and steals.

You can sell out for steals every play of the game and end up with 5 steals. Of course, you gave up a shit load of 5 on 4s in the process and destroyed your team’s defence, but hey 5 steals = good defence right?

Same with blocks. Go ahead and chase blocks all game. Get yourself completely out of position to rebound or defend a 2nd shot, maybe even goaltend and give up automatic points to shots that may not have been going in. Nothing here except the blocks shows up on the statsheet.

Not saying Bam isn’t a fantastic defender, I’m saying do not use box score stats to measure defence unless they are supported by mountains of advanced metrics and tracking data.
