Bam Adebayo vs the DPOY ladder

Source

Current DPOY Ladder (Bovada):

  • Rudy Gobert +550

  • Victor Wembanyama +750

  • Evan Mobley +800

  • Jaren Jackson Jr. +800

  • Anthony Davis +1000

The point of this post is to illustrate that not only is Bam Adebayo being overlooked in DPOY yet again — but also that he is completely cooking these elite defenders when playing them head to head.

he had 19/3/2 against rudy, let’s not cherry pick stats brady

Also the Heat had by far their worst offensive performance of the season against Minny lol.

Homie could give Bam his flowers without making a nonsense argument.

We all know assists are a crucial part of measuring defense for a center

Wemby 2nd!

Whoa. Was not expecting that.

[–] Toxikara@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Spurs ranked 29th in defensive rating out of 30 teams and Wemby's second in DPOY is comical.

I get you want to hype him up like crazy but jeez.

Cook my mam cook !

BAM Is becoming a SuperStar, soon to be a top 10 in this league and yes DPOY too

Listing box score stats to back up a DPOY case is the most meaningless shit. There are no two stats more misleading than raw blocks and steals.

You can sell out for steals every play of the game and end up with 5 steals. Of course, you gave up a shit load of 5 on 4s in the process and destroyed your team’s defence, but hey 5 steals = good defence right?

Same with blocks. Go ahead and chase blocks all game. Get yourself completely out of position to rebound or defend a 2nd shot, maybe even goaltend and give up automatic points to shots that may not have been going in. Nothing here except the blocks shows up on the statsheet.

Not saying Bam isn’t a fantastic defender, I’m saying do not use box score stats to measure defence unless they are supported by mountains of advanced metrics and tracking data.

Gotta love comparing offensive production when discussing a defensive award.

[–] brandoi@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

At least in the last 15 years, every DPOY winner was from a team in the top 5 of defensive rating. It's still early, but the Heat are currently 10th. Also, when have people ever really looked at their performances against other DPOY as comparisons?

[–] Schwalm@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Are these on ball guarded stats?

[–] NemuTheSheep@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Jaren barely defended him when we played the Heat, but ok...

[–] GoldenBoyRecords@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

No Mitchell Robinson?

People are being REAL obtuse in the comments reading this as “offensive stats for why Bam is the DPOY” and not “Offensive stats against players above Bam for the DPOY”

[–] Hypnosix@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Why would you look at Bams offensive stats as a justification for him being DPOY at all? DOPY isn’t about what Bam can do against opponents on offense it’s about how impactful the player is on defense vs the whole team.

I wonder if someone like Tatum could get it. If the Celtics had far and away the best defense at the end of the year, and Tatum is the only starter who played 70+ games, I feel like he'd have a very good argument.

[–] Street-Common-4023@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Davis should be higher and Joel should be here

[–] eur0stepp@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Putting wemby that high is disrespectful to the guys below

[–] PowRightInTheBalls@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

He let JJJ put up 28 points so... Bam got absolutely cooked by that elite defender when playing him head to head I guess?

You were scared to post his stats against Gobert and AD only played the first half of their game. These are some pretty chicken-shit cherry-picked stats you're pushing here.
