Their strategy right now is literally "Let's charge more to sell less, and let's also kneecap a revenue stream that could prop us up during this memory crisis." Sony has been winning so long that they forgot how easy it is to lose. They are gonna find out.

Edit: I just want to point out that Sony could have easily shifted this into a win. "Hey, this is Tim Sony, President of Sony. Right now, things are hard for everyone in the world of consumer electronics. For 20 years we've tried to bring you the best value in entertainment through quality games and low prices. Unfortunately, today, we have to raise our prices to match cost. I know you don't like it. I don't like it, either. However, we still want to give you the best value we can. While we can't control the cost of components, we can control the cost of our first party games. So, now when you buy a new PS5, you get your choice of any first party game you want for free. Any game, no exceptions. We're also throwing in 6 months of PlayStation Plus as well, which gives you even more games to play immediately. While we wish we could bring you a lower priced console, we are trying our best to make it so that you don't have to spend more to have the same amount of fun. Now, get out there, and kill, kill, kill."

God damn it Donut

"Also, all our first party games will be released on PC at a later date. Why would we leave money on the table? That's just stupid!"

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 12 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Kinda weird at the end he called for a school shooting, but otherwise good PR.

It's a reference to the Dungeon Crawler Carl series of books. If you haven't read them, I can't recommend them enough. The audiobooks are also incredibly well done.

[–] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

The books are crap. They've got DOGS in them!

[–] aMockTie@piefed.world 2 points 14 minutes ago

That's true, but they also have Grand Champion, Breed Winner Regional, National Winner Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk.

Goddammit Donut!

They are absolute garbage.

If you thought Ready Player One was good and you like reading self-published internet fanfic, though, knock yourself out.

[–] aMockTie@piefed.world 1 points 5 minutes ago

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy them. I don't feel like there is much similarity between DCC and Ready Player One personally. I didn't care for the protagonist in Ready Player One, and the whole story revolved around pop culture references. DCC has likable main characters in my opinion, and any pop culture references are very few and far between and have no impact on the story.

[–] aMockTie@piefed.world 5 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Oh shit, you just reminded me that the new DCC book is out. I know what I'm doing on my lunch break.

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

It is, and it's great so far :) Enjoy, fellow crawler.

I assumed it was because they saw handheld computers and the Steam Machine as serious competition to Sony's own hardware.

[–] TAG@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Handheld computers are competition to the PlayStation in the sense that Sony would want everyone who owns one to buy a PS5 instead but not in the sense that those consumers having an option is hurting sales significantly. I could not find actual numbers, but analysts seem to be estimating that Valve has sold about 6 million Steam Decks in total. For comparison, Sony sold 1.5 million PS5s last quarter, which is devastating since they sold 2.8 million the year before.

Also, that sales gap is going to get worse in the short term. Instead of raising Steam Deck prices or reducing profit margins, Valve has decided to stop selling systems until RAM prices come back down.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 17 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (2 children)

That was my initial thought, but they don't even have a current gen handheld do they?

(And if they do, frankly the marketing team should be fired)

Perhaps the steam machine is a legit concern for them though

[–] wholookshere@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 19 hours ago

They do, but its bad.

Its just a handled device that stores from only your ps5. Can nor play anything itself.

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 8 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

No, they don't have a handheld, and that's kinda the problem. The ecosystem is growing without them. Steamdeck, Xbox ROG Ally, Nintendo Switch. That's 100% of their competitors, each with handhelds that nearly came out of nowhere in the last few years. Sony is SUPER behind the curve on this, and no amount of "New PSVita5" is gonna save them. They biffed it with the mobile market, and instead of buying in and playing second fiddle, they want to take their ball and go home.

No, they don't have a handheld, and that's kinda the problem

PlayStation Portal enters the chat /s

Which is weird to me, because the software and licensing is where all the money is. And it isn't subject to supply chain issues the way that hardware is.
