Never ever do anything to stop shoplifters or robbers.

Because they could be brandishing a deadly weapon
You aren't paid enough to stop them, let alone intervene in any way
If you were paid enough to stop them, you're paid more than enough to let them get away and not feel any pain from it.

Also:

If you cause them any bodily harm at all, it's disproportionate to the crime they've committed.
You might be wrong, in which case all you've done is attacked someone for no lawful reason.
