“In terms of the sexual act, it will be just very basic. It’s not going to involve descriptions of genitalia or anything of that nature,” Hoffinger said.

Some people are gonna be disappointed.

Like how Daniels must have been.

Why wouldn't it? The affair isn't the point; the point is he illegally tried to cover it up.

Could someone explain how paying a person not to publicly talk about what you did is illegal? If a company does this, it's called NDA. Is it because prostitution is illegal in the US?

[–] Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It's because Trump used tax payers money iirc to pay her off.

[–] synae@lemmy.sdf.org 14 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Not taxpayer money, but campaign fund money which is subject to FEC rules. It's kinda similar to George Santos getting botox or going shopping with campaign funds, but on a grander scale.

[–] PsychedSy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 months ago

But Santos is actually hilarious.

[–] Chrobin@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 6 months ago

Thank you for the explanation!

The crime is not the payoff. It is the falsification of bussiness records.

Don't worry, Riker is at the ready.

Interestingly, the defense used the salacious nature of the testimony to call for a mistrial. Judge Merchan personally had to step in throughout the testimony to keep it focused.

When the mistrial was called for, Merchan refused and admonished the defense for doing their job for them. They should have objected more in order to keep the testimony on track.

Honestly, this was the diciest part of the trial so far and it's not entirely clear how beneficial it was for the prosecution, but it was important nonetheless.

I don't want to hear it but if his base does it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 months ago

A good chunk of his base doesn't even know he's on trial. No shit, my brother was telling me about one of his coworkers who is a huge Trump supporter that legitimately didn't know this trial was starting a few weeks ago.

The only thing that seeps into the bubble is the idea that Trump is being unfairly prosecuted. I don't know how we ever heal as a nation when the conservative news bubble is so out of touch with reality.
