My first reaction was... who?

But I think that's the point. He's a nobody yes-man who won't exercise any influence that could challenge Trump. Learned that lesson with the last pick, who wouldn't even commit some light treason to illegally keep Trump in power.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 54 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I think you underestimate how well-known he is, especially to Republicans. He is definitely a Trump yes-man and always has been, but he is not an unknown at all.

[–] garretble@lemmy.world 66 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Maybe not “always has been,” as at one point he said Trump would be “America’s Hitler.”

But unlike most of us who would probably not want to work for someone you personally think could be Hitler, he’s done the normal GOP thing and flipped right over for the game of it all.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 16 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I totally forgot about that, you're right.

[–] hillbicks@feddit.de 21 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

He also called him an idiot, noxious and, well , see for yourself.

Wow. I totally did not remember him being anything but totally in the ballpark for Trump.

[–] hillbicks@feddit.de 7 points 4 months ago

Apparently most of these are from 2016, which feels like a fucking life time ago. Had to look up the time-line of his "career".

He came to prominence with his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which describes his upbringing in Middletown and his family's Appalachian values. It became a New York Times bestseller and attracted significant press attention during the 2016 United States presidential election. Originally, Vance was a critic of Trump and in 2016 wrote a critical piece in The Atlantic against him, but he later came to support him. Vance launched his first political campaign for Ohio's Senate seat in 2021 and won the Republican nomination after being endorsed by Trump. He defeated Democratic nominee Tim Ryan in the general election.

Plus he's got a beard now so he looks like a real patriot.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

Maybe not “always has been,” as at one point he said Trump would be “America’s Hitler.”

Maybe he meant it in a good way.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Fair enough - not really the circles I run in so I really wouldn't know.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago

He's a completely corrupt piece of shit that I'm sure they didn't vet properly since Trump gets what he wants, so expect all kinds of skeletons to start coming out. Could even be some literal ones.

A whole network of family and friends stepped in to raise him when his parents fell apart, and the generosity of scholarships and government grants for the economically disadvantaged paid his way through a Yale education, all so he could turn around and write a book about how poor people are actually lazy and just need to tug those bootstraps harder and start hitting their kids again

[–] Restaldt@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago

Yeah but you see he found this really sweet ladder that he pulled up after climbing

[–] girlfreddy@lemmy.ca 13 points 4 months ago

Must be nice to 'suck off the state's teat' then boot all those climbing behind you into the abyss.

They're all assholes.

Every. Fucking. One. Of. Them.

[–] treadful@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 months ago

This dude seems to be pretty sharp and is a huge threat. Him and his Peter Theil buddies are working hard to outright destroy democracy. I wouldn't write this guy off as a yes-man.

[–] Fades@lemmy.world 41 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Look no further than J.D. Vance's statements about trump, you will see a very clear disdain and disapproval of Trump and then suddenly, very pro Trump. Happens every time with these fascists.

[–] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 6 points 4 months ago

He's a monster! I could never align myself with him! Well, not unless it would benefit me and what are the cha...

[–] Ultraviolet@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

He doesn't mind Trump being America's Hitler if he has the opportunity to be America's Himmler.

[–] NeptuneOrbit@lemmy.world 29 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Hill Billy heroine for some, little plastic American flags for others.

[–] Lighttrails@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 months ago

TWIRLING TWIRLING

[–] Chocrates@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I don't get the reference.

[–] Waldowal@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Tactic to try and secure Ohio.

[–] KingGordon@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Too bad we all know JD is a huge asshole bootlicker.

[–] Nomad@infosec.pub 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Your autocorrect somehow put a boot in there. Just letting you know.

[–] KingGordon@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Dont threaten him with a good time!

[–] kaitco@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Hopefully, my state can now choose someone else who isn’t a dumbass. Or at least less of one.

Also, loving this decision for the likes of Marje Green who has been doing all those pony tricks in hopes of Trump choosing her and she still didn’t get it.

[–] ulkesh@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Is he resigning his seat to run for VP? Because he doesn’t have to, I think. And if he loses and didn’t resign his seat, then you’re stuck with him.

And he’s from Middletown, so this explains a lot of why he’s attached himself to Trump’s tiny penis.

[–] sudo@lemmy.today 6 points 4 months ago

As we've unfortunately recently learned, 3 inches can be significant.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

Not a surprise at all.

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 7 points 4 months ago

With a name like JD, you know he polishes a knob like nobody's business.

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

What nickname we going with- J.D. Pence, Hillbilly Effigy?

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

That’s actually pretty good lol

Brings me back to like 10 years ago when my political friends almost convinced me I should read his book. Glad I didn’t

[–] PRUSSIA_x86@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

It actually is a good book. As someone from the same general area, I saw a lot of my own family and experiences reflected in his writing. I had hopes that he might step up and push for more of a class-conscious republican party until he turned out to be a fascist tool.

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

I don’t doubt it’s good. I’m just glad I didn’t buy it and put money in his pocket

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 0 points 4 months ago

Lice President? Sucking in Cumand?

[–] TheFonz@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Hmm I wonder why he didn't pick Pence again. Curious.
