Tyler Dykes, 26, who said at sentencing he is supporting Trump to be president, pleaded guilty to assault charges

A Marine who stormed the US Capitol and apparently flashed a Nazi salute in front of the building was sentenced on Friday to nearly five years in prison.

Tyler Bradley Dykes, of South Carolina, was an active-duty US marine when he grabbed a police riot shield from the hands of two police officers and used it to push his way through police lines during the attack by a mob of Donald Trump’s supporters on 6 January 2021.

Dykes, who pleaded guilty in April to assault charges, was previously convicted of a crime stemming from the 2017 white nationalist Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dykes was transferred to federal custody in 2023 after he served a six-month sentence in a state prison.

US district judge Beryl Howell sentenced Dykes, 26, to four years and nine months of imprisonment, the justice department said.

He was active duty doing this. After his stay in federal prison, he'll probably spend another huge chunk in Leavenworth.

[–] Kaboom@reddthat.com 8 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Yeah, the active duty bit is probably the main reason he got as much time as he got

Military Justice hasn't tried him yet. He will have to go through a separate trial before Military judges.

They won't give this fucker 5 years. More like 20+

And I wonder if, during the military trial, the point will be raised that his marine forebears - many of whom we lost during intense combat - had a very different view of Nazism.

Goddamn right it will.

[–] Kaboom@reddthat.com 2 points 4 months ago

Good. What happened to that air force colonel or whatever that shows up in tacticool gear in the Capitol? Anything ever happen to that guy?

Edit: nvm. Found him. He was retired when he did the invasion. He has been caught and jailed.

Five whole years for a Nazi taking part in an insurrection.

With a previous conviction too.

Good thing he didn't have a dime bag on him or else he might have seen some real jail time.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 22 points 4 months ago (2 children)

He's white, that might add a few months at most.

Now a black guy doing a black power salute during the George Floyd protests with a dime bag on him? Put that guy away for life.

If you’re white, the cops just keep your drugs and leave it out of the report.

Source: white guy who had the cops keep his drugs and leave it out of the report.

Depends somewhat on how many minorities there are around to harass. Otherwise they turn to poor teenagers who have a joint in their pocket even if they're white.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

That’s fair. They do have a quota to meet after all.

[–] dactylotheca@suppo.fi 6 points 4 months ago

In fact, that guy might die "resisting arrest" face down on the ground with his hands handcuffed behind his back and a knee to the neck

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

Wait till he gets to the military trial. He was active duty. He’s not done yet.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

They don't call it the Beerhall Putsch 2.0 for nothing.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 28 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Nazis love Donald Trump. And he loves them back!

[–] VanillaBean@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

If the devil himself loved Trump, he'd love him right back.

[–] charade_you_are@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 months ago

I hear there are a lot of nazi types in prison. He should do well in there.

[–] Redacted@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Anyone notice the salute Trump gave mere seconds after the shooting?

He swiftly turned it into a wave/fist and weirdly brought up that it was definitely a fist during his last speech.

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I hate Trump just as much as probably you do. I think this was just an honest, putting his hand up to effectively say I’m here. I’m safe. I’m fine. I don’t think we should read into that exact one. Trust me there’s plenty more we can look at of what he’s done wrong.

[–] Redacted@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Ok fair enough, just thought it was strangely straight for an "I'm ok folks" wave.

[–] xc2215x@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Tyler deserves it.
