From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

I know it's shallow but the name was a real turnoff when I remember it being first announced.

I did eventually try it but it wasn't for me.

I really don't want to explain to people why I'm so excited that I use Barf OS Funtoo sounds like a Fungi thing.

I thank the man for his contributions to the collective ecosystem though.

Funtoo did came up with interesting concepts to improve Gentoo with. I hope they get to live on.

Did they not have a way of installing binaries more easily? I could be confusing it with another derivate of Gentoo.

Anyway, Gentoo has now a binary repo to speed up updates for some packages. No need to try NixOS or Gentoo forks anymore. (:

This is probably me being an exceedingly old grumpy boomer greybeard, but this is why I don't bother with whatever shiny distro everyone likes unless it's got a proper governance/oversight setup via a properly formed foundation or similar.

Anything short of that pretty much is a strong indicator that it's not trustworthy or reliable and, well, this can happen.

Debian or Ubuntu or Fedora or even Arch are unlikely to magically vanish because someone gets bored, and I feel bad for the people who spent time and effort or even money on this project, but, uh, yeah. Don't trust one-person shows.

Not exactly shiny and new as it was established in 2008...

But he is right. As long as a distro is maintained by one individual, it is at risk of being discontinued at any time he can no longer maintain it.

Can anyone tell what this funtoo project is? Never heard of it, sorry.

Derivative of Gentoo by the founder of Gentoo.
