I can’t wait to see what logic they use to justify the fact that he committed a crime before he was president and was convicted after he was president.

[–] macarthur_park@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

“It’s a well established fact that being president changes a man. Therefore the Trump who committed the crime is a different person from the Trump who was convicted. The conviction cannot stand.”

Ah yes. The amnesia defense

Real question. If Trump goes to prison, does Vance take over at president? If so, would Trump be eligible for another since he only served one term due to this?

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 23 points 2 days ago

Trump was almost certainly never going to prison. Now it is completely certain.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 16 points 2 days ago

I don't think he'd automatically take over. They'd probably have to use the 25th Amendment to allow the cabinet to transfer power, because god knows he'd never give it up himself.

But Trump would not be eligible for another term. The 22nd Amendment says "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice".

Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if there's another Trump assassin soon after the inauguration, maybe even at the inauguration, but this one is strangely successful and then Vance becomes president.

[–] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

They'll do it shortly before the 2026 midterms so they can declare martialxlaw and cancel elections.

🙏🙏🙏 (not Vance becoming president, the event which would precede that)

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I can see what you're saying, but I'd rather have a dumb Nazi in charge than a smart one.

[–] Joeffect@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I have said this and I will keep saying it... Vance doesn't want to be vice president... He doesn't talk like he's going to be... It's weirdly like he believes he will be president, at least that's the vibe I get from this guy... As soon as trump does something crazy he's going to say he's unfit for office...

Who’s to say it’s not just going to be a repeat of the Dubya/Cheney dynamic? Trump’s just gonna sit there eating fish delites and double-fisting diet cokes, rage-watching RSBN, and just soaking, marinating in his filth. Meanwhile, Stephen Miller is going to snarf down a handful of chidren’s teeth for breakfast,* crack his knuckles for forty-five minutes, and decide which urban center gets hit with the first big wave of avian flu.

*he waits until sunset before he unhinges his jaw and swallows a dog whole

Because Trump does not let anyone tell him what to do not matter how stupid the alternative is.

Because Trump does not let anyone tell him what to do not matter how stupid the alternative is.

Except Putin.

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (3 children)

He's not sworn in yet. So I don't think Vance could take his place. I would think they'd have to trigger another election.

[–] this@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

If only it worked like that.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

I think the only way he wouldn't is if everyone saw him shoot Trump. Otherwise it's automatic

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

For the first question, I don't know. It's uncharted territory.

And as per the second question, it's dependent on what exactly happens. Term limits apply to the elections, not time spent in office or anything else. The clock only starts ticking when someone is sworn into office. So Trump getting sent to jail could actually give him a third term if he only serves two years. But there's like a 90% chance he doesn't survive the next four years.

I know if you were to go back in my comments I have said that I need to take a break from the news and that’s clearly true. But I also need to call out how fucking stupid all these articles asking “Will trump ***”, the people that need to be informed about them aren’t going to be swayed if they even read them. The effects will have to hit them for them to care
