Do you just go to the home/feed and let it be fed to you? Do you have things you follow specifically and nothing else? Somewhere in between?

Lemmy is all I use, and since it's so small I just browse /all and when I keep seeing subs I'm not interested in (or a language I don't understand) I just block them so I don't see them anymore.

Then I've instance blocked a couple places because of how their mods/admins act so I don't accidentally stumble into a sub from that instance.

You could try to curate a list of subscriptions, but I just don't think Lemmy is big enough for that yet, and you'd miss new subs.

How do you block an instance? Using Voyager

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I use the web client, but it should be wherever your block list is. Webclient you have to manually type it in, there should be three sections:

Accounts

Communities

Instances

So if you can't figure it out in your app, you can just sign on via a webpage to block instances and that should effect the app since it's about your account and not the client.

~~It seems that's only possible on web clients. Will check it later. Thanks!~~ I'm dd, i have never seen the option

[–] macroplastic@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Under filters and blocks in settings! You definitely can.

[–] uhmbah@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Voyager on android: settings, filters and blocks, scroll to the bottom.

[–] Wild_Mastic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I cannot believe i've missed that section. Thanks

[–] vaper@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't see a way to do it in Voyager's settings, but if you go to lemmy.world in a web browser and go to your settings, there is a "Block" tab at the top next to settings. Go to that and you can block users, instances, or communities.

[–] Wild_Mastic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

~~Yeah, that's probably the only way for now. Thanks!~~ I'm dumb, I have never seen the option

I don't follow much social media, beside Lemmy and maybe YT.

And then, since self-inflicted pain is not my thing, I only read those communities (and watch those channels) I have chosen to subscribe to.

[–] BruceTwarzen@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Same. Unfortunately my youtube got flooded with right wing bullshit this month

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

Same with shitter before i stopped using it.

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago

I'm sorry to hear that

[–] Today@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I do Lemmy by subscribed/new until I get to something I recognize. I scroll Facebook a bit to see what my distant family is doing and to see what's going on in the work/industry/hobby groups that I follow. I check Facebook marketplace local to see if there's anything cool. Then I read the news for local stuff and to see what didn't get posted here. Then if I'm super bored I go back to Lemmy/All

I search YouTube for how-to videos or specific songs. The only time I really take recommendations is on music - I like to pick the recommended song that's least similar to the song that I just listened to and keep doing that to see where it takes me.

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 2 points 1 month ago

Ooh, I'm going to try out your music finding approach!

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

When I'm at work, I click on the little "Feed me garbage" button at the bottom of Windows, and get pissed off at how evil and ignorant people are.

I really need to quit doing that.

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I despise that button, I always turn it off

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I might be ok, if I just stayed away from the comments, but that's like driving past an accident and NOT looking!

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago

hahaha, fair

[–] Classy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago

I like to find gemblogs and try to find indeces to other blogs on the smolweb.

[–] gnomesaiyan@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I don't use social media except Lemmy. I refuse to eat bad food, so why would I consume bad content? And stay away from commenting sections like YouTube and Steam unless you like brain rot. People be peopleing.

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

im subbed to ~700 communities across dozens of servers. the https://moist.catsweat.com/all/newest queue is always hoppin

then theres the microblog stuff where i follow a few mastodon, universodeon peeps.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I open Jerboa and start scrolling with it showing me everything sorted by newest comment so only the posts people are talking in show up at the top. When I see something interesting, I open it.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 2 points 1 month ago

oh I like that

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 3 points 1 month ago

I look through my subscriptions first and then through all but I block magazines where I have no interest in the topics or are in a foreign language relative to me.

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 month ago

I only use Lemmy (first sort by All TopSixHour, then Subscribed New) and occasionally mastodon, but that place is kind of empty so there's not a lot to look at. Back in the day I used to use Instagram every other day, but I would not ever recommend that ever to anyone ever on this planet ever. It was awful.

[–] john117@lemmy.jmsquared.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I use Lemmy and YouTube. when Lemmy content dries up, I watch a couple of things on YouTube before I begin doing something productive

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hoe do you get to your content? Do you sort by new? Do you use the home, shorts or subscription page?

[–] john117@lemmy.jmsquared.net 3 points 1 month ago

I do a combination of new, active, hot. mostly just sort by new since the other options are iffy on the sync client, its not like there are so many posts to sift through when I surf using new lol

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

On mastodon, i sometimes go to the explore page to see whats trending.

[–] Mwa@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Mainly mixed, I use mostly youtube(via invidious(Piped broke)),Peertube,odysee,Lemmy.

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh nice, alternative apps! How do you approach finding content? Just let the home page feed you stuff or do you do something else?

[–] Mwa@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

Recommendations,homescreen,etc

[–] Toes@ani.social 1 points 1 month ago

After browsing my regular subscriptions, I'll scroll through all mode. But it's mostly us politics :/
