I submitted a post and it looks like it is automatically collapsed, requiring a click to see all the text - but most other posts by other folks are automatically uncollapsed so you can see the whole thing. My post is four or five sentences long. What causes this?

I’ve noticed this too recently… would like to know

This is a feature in Glitch (which is a fork of Mastodon), where it's a setting (on by default) for the server administrator which means posts longer than a certain length will collapse to a single line. (https://glitch-soc.github.io/docs/features/collapsible-toots/)

Personally I find it one of the more annoying 'features' of glitch.

I'm trying to figure this out too.
