It would make more sense for them to do away with conferences and have each team play each other 3 times. That way the standings would be perfectly balanced and you wouldn’t have the “this conference is tougher than the other” argument. Most soccer leagues in the world use a similar format.

I feel like the question would be why didn’t it start like that, rather than why don’t they change it

[–] LeMickeyMice@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It has been 82 games since 67-68 when there were 12 teams

Change is an overrated concept

Home vs away games. In any case, play twice against the other conference (30 games), and four times against your own conference (56 games) for a total of 86. Still, the NBAPA will eat you.

even this makes more sense than having divisions

They need less games not more.

72 should be the max

32 home games

32 away games

5 game in season tournament

Division Championship game and play-in tournament

I think the tournament should be something Division based to make your "local" group really count.

And if they are going to have an in season tournament it should be exhibition against foreign teams as a sort of world cup.

So something like with the preseason exhibition games

[–] calculating_hello@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah exactly and help them build world interest, have the east versus west all star at the end

[–] BigHomieBaloney@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Nah we don't need less games if anything we need more. Star players aren't playing more than 65 games regardless of how many are in a season.

Extend the season and 100% of that increased play time will go to the bench players. Let's not kid ourselves

Because they all are too wussy to even play 82 games as it is…

[–] nikop@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

because 82 is already too many and they need to cut games, not add more

[–] sgcpaulo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Cost.

It is cheaper to send your teams across the state than halfway round the world, so inter-conferences only have 2 games while inter-divisions have as much as 4.

I actually like consistency, if for no other reason than you don’t have to add additional asterisks to the record books.

The conferences and divisions make it so teams play other teams in their Time Zone more often. And more importantly, early Playoff series will be against an opponent in a Time Zone that is no more than 1hr away*.

This is important because the NBA is played on weeknights. The closer to Prime Time games are played, the more convenient it is for people to watch.
