Through the Wire
NBA - Main
Game analysis, highlights and everything else that is happening in the NBA.
Skweek by Tony Parker is subtitle in english on Youtube. There's also FirstTeam and Trashtalk (french podcast).
Thinking basketball
Without a doubt the most intelligent in-depth NBA analysis I've heard.
I usually like them, but a lot of their episodes have at least half an hour that could have been cut. They really need an editor or producer to keep things moving.
I disagree, I recommend thinking basketball
I think Zack Lowe actually does a decent job.
"Welcome to...the Lowe Post"
Followed by the introduction of a guest and a 5 minute neurotic chaotic monologue followed by a short question for his guest. Kidding aside, it's a great podcast.
I like Zach but can no longer stand his pod. It's been the same bland format, guests, and jokes for years.
Someone needs to set this man free. Hopefully if ESPN goes under he'll join The Ringer.
Dunc'd On with Nate Duncan and Danny Leroux have a great podcast- lots of numbers/stats, no hot takes really.
Patbev can be surprisingly insightful. Occasionally.
Gane Theory Podcast is great
Duncan On if you're a numbers nerd
The Old Man & the Three
Trying that right now, I think JJ Redick is good but not enough general basketball, every podcast seems to have a guest so they only talk about 1 or 2 things relevant to the guest. Which like is good for specific ones, like Joe Mazzulla or Ty Maxey. So if that’s your thing go for it. But I’m looking for more overall discussion I think
Dunker's Spot might be what you're after.
Dunker’s Spot has the best actual description of nuts and bolts basketball strategy
Second this. I'm a better fan now after listening. I can sort of understand what I am watching on the court now.
Thinking basketball is definitely the most intelligent NBA podcast I've heard. I also enjoy some of the shows on the Ringer NBA Show feed (I mainly like Group Chat and The Answer) as well as The Mismatch. If you're interested in upcoming NBA players, The Ringer's NBA Draft Show is really good too.
Which one is Raja’s?
Real Ones. I don't really listen to it much.
Raja is great for behind the scenes/how the sausage gets made stuff, but he also blatantly mails in pods when he's not interested in the topic.
Bill Simmons podcast for behind the scenes upper management stuff. Any basketball takes by him between preseason and the Christmas game are useless because he's more focused on football at that point
Zach Lowe is always a quality listen
Thinking Basketball for an in depth look at things and players
Team specific podcasts like DNVR or the rights to Ricky Sanchez are the best way to hear literally anything about true role players with the added caveat of they will have a homer team bias........but how will you ever hear more than a 30 second quip on national shows about the 8th and 9th men on a team
I like locked on. There’s locked on NBA which covers the nba and then there’s locked on -insert team name-
Dunc'd On with Nate Duncan and Danny Leroux have a great podcast- lots of numbers/stats, no hot takes really.
They are extraordinarily granular, without being particularly entertaining. I really only listen to their free feed as filler when my usuals have run out.
Also, is Hollinger and Duncan dead? I liked that better than Duncd on because they approach the game from such different directions.
Cannot deal with Nate's voice and the way he talks over Danny constantly, it's like listening to an abusive domestic partnership lol. Do agree that they really know their stuff, in particular the minutiae of the CBA and cap space details
No Chill Podcast
The Flagrant Ones!!
JJ Reddick’s podcast definitely sounds like it has what you are looking for. He definitely dives deep into the basketball aspect of it and keeps up with what is going on in the nba. I’m personally not the biggest fan of his analysis because he legit seems to care more about stats and advanced metrics than legit any other analyst I have ever seen. Especially during the season he will mention RAPTOR 10x a podcast.
But still he is pretty much the only player ran podcast that really dives deep into the the more complex elements. Actually Draymond also does it on his podcast as well but it’s lowkey a hard listen sometimes. I always thought Draymond should get a co host because he is way better at answering questions than he is at just trying to generally cover a topic.
I also really enjoy reading the Ringer. They put out pretty high quality stuff and the more you read the more you will figure out which writers you like and which you don’t. I highly recommend checking out Kevin O’Connor’s draft guides that he has been doing the past few years:
https://nbadraft.theringer.com/2023/
Also you can replace the year in that link and go look back at previous draft guides, I find them all really interesting even years out. I was just reading the 2018 thought it was cool seeing how certain players turned out
I like the Bill Simmons Podcast even though I disagree with 90% of the shit he says. He's entertaining and has good guests.
Then there is Zach Lowe which is my favorite of the in-season pods, though I dislike a good bit of his guests.
Paul George's podcast is my favorite of the player podcasts.
The Ringer NBA has some good podcasts, group chat is the most entertaining.
No Dunks
Basketball Index pod
The Mis Match, but they can be hot topicy at times. Kevin O'Connor is great and more analytical in his articles.
Group chat on the ringer Nba show. It can be hot take-y at times but usually that’s culled by the other two hosts scoffing at the idea. Great chemistry between the three guys and always gets a good laugh out of me.
If you want something a little unusual besides all the good suggestions here, Oddball with Amin El Hassan & Charlotte Wilder launched over the off season, which I think gave it time to gel before the season started.
Unfortunately, this means the demise of the best basketball podcast, Basketball Illuminati which has been rolled into Oddball.
Dunc’d On, Game Theory, Real GM are all good. Dunc’d On is especially fun when they do their “Mock Trade Deadline” and “Mock Off Season” episodes.
Gils Arena or Pat Bev’s podcast
On the Athletic NBA feed, there’s a weekly (Friday) show called the Slam and Jam that is reliably great. The two hosts are very level-headed and thoughtful, and they pay attention to the whole league (even though they love their hometown Thunder). Plus, they’re old friends, and the overall vibe of the show is very friendly and pleasant. Each week they have a guest who’s usually a beat writer for one team, so they’ll go into depth on that one team.
My favourites are Brian Windhurst, Old Man and the Three, and Bill Simmons. I know they’re all pretty mainstream but I enjoy them all (even though I don’t like Bill very much)
No dunks and Bill Simmons for the conversations style by people who actually love and watch a shit ton of basketball
Hoops tonight hosted by Jason Timpf on the Volume. I first heard about Jason as he was listed by someone as one of the top Jokic "haters". I turned on his podcast to see what the fuss was about. Turns out I think he's got some really good analysis and has even come around full circle on Jokic. He does have a bit of a Lakers bias, but he puts out a lot of really good in depth content about the entire league.
I also really enjoy Nerd Sesh on the volume, but they cover a wider variety of sports not just the NBA.
Came here to post this one.
Jason's analysis is really good, I don't know how long his channel has been around but his breakdowns and delivery stand out.
No dunks, the Lowe post, the ringers got a few shows, the athletic nba show
NBA front office
road trippin is cool.
the ringer I believe has a nba podcast.
mayb bill Simmons once NBA season starts
Down to Dunk is a great podcast feature Andrew Schlecht from The Athletic which specifically covers the Thunder. The Monday and Wendesday pods are especially good with some nuanced discussion - Friday is more goofy, but enjoyable if you get into it.
Locked on Celtics
Dunc’d on Basketball, Hollinger and Duncan, Lowe Post, Greatest of All Talk
The Mismatch is my go to. It’s rarely shallow and is usually pretty fun. Plus they both have some real connections so they get a lot of info straight from the source.
