I don’t mind a date I mostly I tend to wear the same watch for around a week straight so just find it annoying to have to set the correct date on some watch models every time they stop ticking. Seems like some companies don’t make it as easy to when it comes to quick adjustments.

[–] Grumpy-old-bastard@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I don't give a damn what day of the month it is. I'd much prefer the day of the week, something much more important to me than the date.

I think, in some cases, it ruins the finish of the watch, and I do like the date complication when it is designed well. I especially like them when they are at the 6 o’clock section

[–] TheRealFalec@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I like having the date. I quite often forget the day of the month, so having that reminder is handy. I do think it can look odd depending on placement, but this is why my favorite go to is the Oris pointer date. Perfect combo of having the date, without having a window to break up the overall look of the dial.

[–] arktonoros@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Oh, I like date windows. But I really HATE waffle dials and integrated bracelets.

[–] ezwip@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I have too many autos to keep them wound so the day means nothing to me as I'll set that anyways and it's on my phone screen if I need it.

[–] boredgape@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

All of my watches have a date complication, and one of them has both day and date. I look at the date all the damn time.

People complain about setting the date when they rotate out watches. If your spending more than a couple grand on nice watches that you want to wear regularly, why not spend a few hundred more on some winders? I've ever been at most a day off - and that was because of a shorter month.

[–] Coolstuffonhere@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I always like the date cause otherwise a dial can look boring.

[–] pro-jec-tion@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Color matching and the fact that perpetual calendars are expensive?

[–] aladinodebert@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I mostly only get watches with date windows. Too useful to pass up.

[–] WatchandThings@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Personally, I prefer date on my daily wear watch. I prefer no date on my occasional wear watches. Mainly, I don't want to deal with setting the date, and for those occasional wear not having a date isn't a big deal.

If I was the type that regularly rotates through all the watches, then I'd want no date on everything so that I'm not stuck date setting everyday.

[–] webswinger666@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I don’t need the date. if i could choose I wouldn’t want a date.

[–] EnsuingDamage@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I prefer a date complication and my (maybe) unpopular opinion is I like it at the 3 rather than the 6. Symmetry be damned.

[–] rowthecow@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Cos it's just so unnecessary to set it if you don't wear it daily. I need the time multiple times a day. I hardly ever need the date.

[–] ManguyHumandude@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I much prefer a date complication, unless it’s a dress watch that I wear infrequently.

I question the premise. Do MOST people really dislike the date? Or, do you just make a note of those complaints that you read and hear? I'd argue that MOST people like having a date, but don't go out of their way to say it.

[–] 4look4rd@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I have a lot of watches and I don’t like setting the date. AM/PM is annoying.

Aesthetically I also think most date windows are half assed, but sometimes they are done well and enhance the overall dial.

[–] _matthewbaysa@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

This is a really good point, and I've never thought about it that way. Thank you for this.

[–] pigpen808@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

11 in my collection, I don’t own a piece without a date

[–] Coldboy8@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

In addition to interrupting the design, which is something I don’t particularly care about, it also takes away from the grab and go nature of a watch. If you have a rotation of, say, 3 watches and you want to switch to a watch with a date that you wore 2 weeks ago. Time setting then becomes passing midnight to make sure you have your am/pm right, then setting the time, then switching the date. And I know it’s a nice way to interact with you watch blah blah blah but it gets old.

I think it’s the most useful complication, actually.

[–] Chill_stfu@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I like having the date, but I don't like most date windows. My Oris pointer date and CW Sealander (dial matched date at 6:00) does it better than most.

[–] _matthewbaysa@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah I think Christopher Ward does it well, might have to buy one lol. Got my eye on either The Twelve or a Sealander too.

[–] Chill_stfu@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

My black sealander is my go-to. 36mm

[–] _matthewbaysa@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I'm seeing there's a GMT option for the sealanders too? Might have to go for that one.

[–] Chill_stfu@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yeah I like it. If they make it in a 36 I'll be their first in line.

I love the date complication. I thought Day/Date was a little bit too much, but then I deployed on an aircraft carrier with one and quickly changed my mind.

I can't stand the magnification bubble though. Guess no sub for me.

[–] _matthewbaysa@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

This is a cool story, what was your daily wear when you were deployed?

[–] Shaun32887@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Usually it was my Oris Diver 65. I had a few cheap watches before that that I never really bonded with, and they were all forgotten when I got the Oris.

I got my Bremont MBII (MH-60R) shortly before I got out, so I had that for my last workup cycle. Normally I wouldn't get the day date, but I wanted the 60R model and that's what it was. It turned out to be extremely useful, and I don't think it looked too bad since both of the wheels were color matched with to dials, and with the lettering in white (Oris does this as well).

I had a cheap quarts chrono before the Oris that I eventually stopped wearing because a highly domed hesalite crystal and tight metal passages and doorways do not work well together. But, having a stopwatch immediately available led me to time most of the evolutions I encountered, everything from how long does it take to get from point a to point b, to how long does it take to pull a helo out of the hangar. It led to me having amazing time management skills!

[–] Chealicious@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Because that’s where the flaw happens.More moving parts more things to not be gen

[–] dervlen22@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Personally prefer no date window look , clean design .

[–] Brickwx@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Cuz they know nothing about watches

[–] ocardobwyn@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

What I don't fancy is the fact that it's too often at 3 o clock and quite on the periphery of the dial. A more centered position on the vertical axis, either on the upper or lower part of the dial, would please my eye more (as is the day complication on the day date) - but I imagine they can't center it too much due to the diameter it needs to have to accomodate for 31 numbers

[–] jasonin951@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I don’t like the date because it’s one more thing I have to change when there are less than 31 day months so it’s more of a laziness thing for me vs aesthetic but I have to say date windows with magnifiers are ass.

[–] simioh@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I like date windows in my watches, even better if it's day/date, even better if the day is in spanish (me being mexican).

[–] eTransporter@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Not sure that is most. I like dates as do so many others.

[–] dervlen22@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

If only the manufacturers and designers put the date window at the 6 o'clock position instead of the 3 o'clock , I'd be far happier .

[–] zxczcxv@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I like date complication. I don't care whether it's color matched to the dial or not. It's a deal breaker for me if there is no date. Although I hate day complication. Especially those with dual language. Takes to long to change to the next day.

[–] Apostate_Ape@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I prefer a watch without any complications, including hands. The hands get in the way of the face, are asymmetrical, and move at different speeds. If I want to know what time and date it is I'll look at a clock and a calendar.

[–] OutdoorTechGuy@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

A watch without a date is a deal breaker for me.

Edit: I also wish the day function was more popular, not as useful as the date but still nice to have.

[–] Jerseybz@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The date function is a necessity for me. My watch does 2 things, tells time, and tells the date. It's literally half of its functionality.

[–] _matthewbaysa@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

What's the other half?

[–] dcwhite98@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I think more people prefer a date function. But no date watches offer better dial symmetry and are easier to set if they stop - not having to set the date and the time, just the time.

[–] DismalSong6031@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Destroys symmetry

[–] IntrovertSwag@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I like having the date window. However I find it more aesthetically pleasing to have it at the hour 6 marker I stead of the 3

[–] punkxiety@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

for me the problem not in the date but in the font - obviously it’s not the perfect in so many cases, and by the way when I saw how date watches look without the dial I started to dislike it more - so much weight and space

[–] hourGUESS@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I like all my date watches. I like my day date watches too. Who doesn't like this complication again?

[–] ubercl0ud@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I only buy with date complications, day of the week is just a perk. But date is a must for me.

[–] PlamoPioneer@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I'm pretty sure the majority of the world's most popular watches have a date complication?

Some people don't like that it breaks the symmetry of the watch when it's on a side though.
