What i mean is someone that is an incredible player that's very popular and has won a ton of awards but hasn't been able to win a championship.

Tatum is nowhere generational compared to what Ohtani is

It would be Wemby if he really puts it together on offense, in terms of 2 way insanity.

Harden in terms of accolades but no win.

Since Ohtani is a "two-way" player in the MLB, I consider someone like Kawhi or Paul George as the Shohei Ohtani, but Kawhi has a ring so I guess PG-13 or someone like Jimmy Butler who can accel at both offense and defense.

Rudy Gobert

The weird thing about the comparison is that Ohtani has 2 things he's top 10 or so in (batting and pitching). If you correlate batting and pitching to having unique offensive skills (e.g. scoring + playmaking) then Harden is a pretty close comparison. The issue is that someone being a top 10 scorer and playmaker in basketball is significantly more common than someone being a top 10 pitcher and batter.

The same goes for if you correlate pitching and batting to offense and defense. In the last 30 years alone Kawhi, Kobe, Duncan, Hakeem, DRob, KG, CP3, Pippen, Jordan, Dwight, Bron, etc. all could qualify as being top 10 in offense and defense at some point.

I just don't think the comparison works.

genuine question, what are some other things in baseball you can be top 10 at besides pitching and batting? probably something along the lines of baseball IQ but what else?

Fielding, base running. You could divide batting into contact vs power as well

well defense obviously, and baserunning I guess

The most popular player internationally without a title? Luka.

Honestly Embiid maybe. Huge talent, never gotten over the hump. Might be leaving the only team he’s known. MVP. Didn’t grow up in the US. He’s a two-way player that when healthy is pretty unstoppable. He scores in multiple ways. Not sure why no one has said him.

just on face value, Watanabe

There has basically no one who has done what Ohtani has done. When babe was a big time hitter he wasn't full time pitcher.

Shohei Ohtani is like a combination of Jokic on offense and Ben Wallace on defense. No comparison.

He isn't close to either of those guys on either side of the ball. He's elite at both, but not all-time great like those guys were/are

You're looking for a guy with insane regular season stats who hasn't really had any sort of team success at all

[–] mxgicjohnson@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Doesn’t exist but Jordan probably the closest thing

There's only one cross-sport comparison to Shohei that would fit, cricket. But Gary Sobers was probably not as good as either a batsman or as a bowler as Shohei
