I have recently been considering picking up the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe. I love the combo of the grey ceramic case and blue dial and it would be a good diversifier in my collection. But at 43.6mm it would also be by far the biggest. I have a relatively small wrist and to me it looks and feels borderline but I think I may just be able to pull it off. So I ask you, r/watches, the age old question...is this too big for my wrist?

I know a person with this watch and it looks nuts in person, get it

[–] madnarg@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I would not look down at that in public and think “that guy’s watch is too big for his wrist”.

The 99% of people who aren’t obsessed with watches wouldn’t either.

Not too big, the dial matches your suit nicely. Maybe consider a BP Chronograph

[–] helpilikewatches@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Literally no one cares except us deluded folks here. If you like it, rock it.

[–] supermarketoflove01@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

It’s fine

It’s a smidge too big. I feel your pain. This is my dream dive watch if they made the ceramic version in the 38mm. Maybe one day they will.

[–] willigd@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yeah I looked at the 38 too...it looks just a bit smushed together at that size to me. I wish they made a 40 or even a 42. Feel like that would be the perfect size, especially given how open the dial is.

The watchmaker brand make unappealing watches, but that blue looks nice with the strap. It looks normal I wouldn’t call it too big for your wrist though.

[–] Goaterade@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Nope - size looks good for you

[–] Competitive_Low_8913@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Maybe for a mm, but it doesn't look bad.

[–] Fratello_Timo@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The watch looks perfect on you. I sometimes get the feeling that people get a kick out of trying to show off they are in-the-know about a (completely nonsensical) "rule".

I have a general rule. Look at the watch from underneath your wrist. If you can see the lugs hanging over, it is too long. Note that there are exceptions such as with integrated bracelets.

[–] Haram_Snack_Pack@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

If you need to ask yourself that question, then I am thinking too big. The crown also looks like it will dig into your wrist a bit unfortunately.

Just get it if you love it and can afford it. I never get why people seek validation from anonymous strangers about something nobody’s likely to ever notice you even wear.

It’s the age old “decide for me oh anonymous strangers” that’s pointless.

So what if people dislike or like or agree or disagree with it? Get it if you love it. Simple.

What’s wrong with getting feedback from like minded people. I agree with the sentiment but this is what reddit is for. Let the man ask his question…

[–] Feezbull@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It’s seeking validation for something nobody cares about though. If someone says “it’s ugly man, looks like shit. You’re a nerd” would it then affect his morale so much he feels like shit?

If it does, then it’s truly pointless anyway. Why does what people say about how it looks on HIM matter? Sounds like needing validation honestly and just terrible insecurity.

Getting feedback about a good watch or if it’s worth the price etc is far more objective in that sense. About whether it fits you because it may be 2-3mm bigger or even 10mm bigger? Completely ridiculous imo.

So if someone loves the watch and then 10 people say it looks too big then what? They sulk and don’t buy it and wish they had bigger hands? Sounds like a great way to live….

It’s just right!

[–] Sharp-Ad-4651@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Gorgeous, but a little too big I think.

[–] Queasy-Bad600@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

You know they make a 38mm version right

[–] Hurricane_Ivan@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Looks fine. No overhang lug to lug

[–] Mikeytee1000@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yes, the 38mm would be much better for you.

[–] happyexit7@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yes, I think so.

[–] hotsunami@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Looks great. Get it.

[–] joshgordonforreal@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

It fits. If you love it, go for it.

[–] slicktromboner21@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

It’s not too big but it does seem awfully boring.

[–] teckel@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

She big! But basically all Blancpain Fifty Fathoms are big.

[–] Mawaqeet@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

There's a 38 version I believe why not try that

[–] Classic70@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

My scientific method for determining fit consists of putting it on and if I think “that looks/feels great” I have a winner. If you are conflicted enough to ask others I think it may not be right for you.

[–] Busy_Fly8068@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

If you asked the question, you’ll always think about it when you pick up the watch to wear. Don’t do it.

The right watch should have no doubt. None.

You won’t grow to like it — you’ll just grow to resent it; forcing yourself to wear it because you paid for it.

Have you looked at the Glasshutte SeaQ? It’s a great “not a submariner” dive watch like the FF.

[–] OES25@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Agree with others. A smidge too big, but no dealbreaker. You can still safely go for it if you like the watch really well. It’s also a bit safer to go for something with a ever so slightly too large lug to lug on a strap, than it would be on a bracelet in my experience/opinion

[–] rvdp66@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It's little big but the fifty fathoms is always going to be a chonky boy so it is what it is. You should go for it.

[–] hzg511-@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Smaller one would be more elegant.

If we're getting picky and pedantic, yes. But...

  • It's a dive watch. It's not a dress.

  • Only watch nerds will ever notice or care.

  • It's only just a teeny, tiny bit too large.

[–] haikara7@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Size looks fine to me. The colours look great though.

[–] PhillyHank@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It’s not too big by classical definition, ie, lug to lug is on the top of your wrist. It’s not beyond the top of your wrist.

But, as others have said — it’s a bit close to too big. 😥

Still, as others have recommended: if you like then rock it!! 👍🏾

[–] platenumd93@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

They make it in 38mm as well, did you try that size on?
