I feel omega should sit next to IWC. I own one each and think they’ve both gone overboard with their prices. IWC possibly a bit more so maybe just one tier appart, but omega definitely sits below tudor and oris.

Look Rolex is bottom tier. If you went to a Rolex restaurant, it doesn’t matter how good the food was, if the service was as fucking shit as a Rolex AD you’d leave a zero star review.

This is one of the most reasonable lists I’ve seen.

Nomos for great value for money?

[–] London_Bloke_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

JLC is over priced these days, the price of the classic reverso has pretty much double in the last two years. Ironically, I’d swap it for IWC which states it’s overpriced on the chart. Cartier listed as innovative as well? Not in their core range.

Nomos could and should be added to the great value for money range. Not sure Grand Seiko is in the FU prices though.

How the hell is Zenith overpriced...

Should belong with the consistently great and innovative category.

[–] GFCallsMePapi@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Cartier innovative? 😂

[–] Carleidoscope@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I need certina on there

An upper middle class professional with responsibilities who wants to make a statement that they are an upper middle class professional with responsibilities should go with the 'interesting but over-priced' slot. Nothing screams ladder-climbing upper middle like an oversized two-tone Breitling

I am sure upper middle class with responsibilities needs constant reminders to lighten up, try Timex Marlin® Hand-Wound x Peanuts Snoopy Dancing Reissue 34mm Leather Strap Watch or Mr Jones Berry Late. Good luck on yon quest.

lmao take my upvote. Been seeing all kinds of these charts over the years and yours is the best and most spot-on I've ever seen!

Can't agree with this chart more as I own Cartier, Omega, Tudor, Casio and am considering getting a Longines. Sold my IWC as you pointed out it's just overpriced. Looked into Zenith and Breitling a while back and could never justify their prices either.

Currently have a Casio DBC-611 (Silver colourway) on my wrist as I write this and I'm loving it. It's adorably retro and it's got all sorts of lovely little gimmicks:

  • Day of the week in several languages
  • Perpetual calendar up to 2099
  • DST toggle
  • Second time zone
  • Toggleable button press beep
  • Storage of 25 phone numbers (all settings/data wiped on battery replacement every ~3 years)
  • 4-function calculator (you can save a constant and accumulate repeated calculations to a result)
  • Conversion between two currencies (you can input one rate and toggle conversion direction)
  • 5 alarms (daily, monthly, annually)
  • Hourly time signal (toggleable)
  • Stopwatch with split time

Upper-middle class professional with responsibilities

If you're not chasing that particular air of sophistication that comes with a fancy/dress watch, the not-so-rugged quirky practicality of this Databank is absolutely wonderful! Other styles include the classic CA-53W or the new CA-53WF variants with great colourways (and an admittedly harder to read inverted LCD display). The new "Casi-oaks" are pretty nice too.

Timex?? Analog ones are mostly shit..

[–] OafleyJones@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Probably the tree first off there’s lists that I 100% agree on. Missing the likes of Nomos and a whole bunch of other German brands.

[–] klanny@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

For me if I reached that point, omega is highest I’ve ever really considered not ’sensible’, but not obscene. If you’re playing the Rolex game, or spending close to their grey market prices or nearer £10k, you really have to consider if it’s worth it imo.

Vintage piaget is disgustingly good

JLC needs knocked into FU Pricing

The answer of what you should buy btw is a heady mix of 10% floating rate notes, maybe 10% long term corporate bonds, another 20% in a municipal bond fund, 30% in equity-indexed annuities, 20% in REITs, and 10% in whatever you feel like. Or something along those lines. Stupid responsibilities.

I like the effort putting the chart together, as well as the title-well done.

As a lower-middle class professional in public education with tons of responsibilities, I can get away with pretty much anything, but the students appreciate my bling. My watches are "sick," the highest possible compliment.

FU prices? F**k you prices I assume?

I'd like to buy a Movado, but I'm curious about the OP's low opinion about the brand.

Where is Certina?

[–] shaka_zulu12@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's not perfect, and as others said, there's some important omissions, but as tier lists go, might be the fairest i've seen.

My thoughts on some of the brands for which I don't totally agree:

  • JLC: great watches, but getting quite expensive (see below my comment for ALS);
  • Cartier: not so sure about innovation unless you're talking about their high-end pieces; their most successful lines are quite traditional;
  • ALS: not that expensive given the quality; for example, a Saxonia Thin goes for 24,500 EUR and the JLC Ultra Thin Small Seconds is 22,200 EUR (see my comment above);
  • BVLGARI: not all pieces are overpriced; for example the Octo Roma Chronograph goes for less than 10k which aligned with competition;
  • UN: For the Freak alone, it doesn't deserve to be in the "meh" category, and the Marine range has very interesting pieces;
  • RM: because you have a lot of money, and you like to show it.

I have a bunch of Seiko watches. Their line goes from beaters to very high end. They have a quality product for every level and occasion.

Man, if UN isn't innovative I don't know what is

[–] lord_bastard_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Buy whatever you like and not what others like

[–] Disastrous_GOAT_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

What do you think of Bremont?

[–] Forswear01@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Im slightly unhappy with putting casio as only buy once, but then again im a gshock fanatic. Their new g-steel lines look pretty nice and you can wear them anywhere with no fear of slamming, breaking, falling, scratching, all safe in the fact that it was built for that

[–] Allsaffar@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] Andodx@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The "Great Value for Money" Line lacks Glashütte Original and Nomos.

[–] senpai_avlabll@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hahahaha not at all surprised to see Hublot and Jacob & Co under "why would you buy this." Completely agree, there are some watchmakers that just seem like they exist to serve people with bad taste but deep pockets. I don't think UN is meh though, my lifelong dream is to own a Royal Blue Tourbillon at some point in my life, but I guess their more recent offerings have been pretty meh. I also believe all the fashion brands like Gucci and Hermes shouldn't even make it to the list because their watches are made by 3rd party mass manufacturers.

[–] red--jar@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Chopard should be in the fine watchmaking at FU prices
