Pretty much the title. I've seen plenty of people using proxmox and truenas but I don't really see many homelab users running Ubuntu server or something similar? Do many people actually use it to run docker or any containers on their machines? Just curious.

Rocky Linux on bare metal to run mostly docker containers for me.

[–] pnlrogue1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That's what I'd do. I don't have a home server yet but my game server is an Ubuntu server running the game in Podman (instead of Docker).

I don't physically home lab (tiny apartment with a partner who doesn't like fan noise) - but my virtual home lab (AWS) is all Ubuntu server. It's been my flavour of choice for almost 20 years.

Must admit, my initial thoughts on ubuntu server that snaps would make it very easy to install certain services proved to be true, sudo snap install nextcloud, and bang, nextcloud is installed.

I guess its no good though if you dont like snaps, for something like next cloud though i wouldnt be bothered if its installed from a snap

I use ubuntu server for vms in proxmox and ubuntu for my lxc containers

[–] Sipheren@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

All my VMs run Ubuntu server and the actual metal server itself runs Ubuntu.

[–] brad9991@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Debian > Ubuntu

Probably there is some people here running VMs with Ubuntu Server in their Proxmox machines.

Loads of us run Ubuntu VMs on Proxmox.

[–] darthrater78@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

There's dozens of us! Dozens!

[–] Any_Particular_Day@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well, that makes four of us. 😆

[–] flupowder@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

What? That's five of us.

I want to run an IRC chat and a virtual assistant so I'll probably run those in an Ubuntu server VM

[–] jfergurson@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m not sure if I quali as a homelabber, but Ubuntu server is definitely runnning my Nextcloud as a snap package. Once I move it to proxmox it’ll still run as an os on vm, just to run the Nextcloud.

[–] Lopoetve@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Crap ton of them as VMs, but bare metal? One workstation and one serve station.

[–] Geoffman05@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I used to use Ubuntu VMs on Proxmox host but I’ve switched to Debian a year or so ago.

[–] YooperKirks@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ubuntu server on ESXi VMs
Xubuntu on laptop

[–] coltrain423@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I ran Ubuntu Server on VMs in Proxmox for a while, and those VMs primarily hosted services via Docke containers, but I’ve since migrated to Debian for reasons.

So… yes! Lots of us do! We just often virtualize it rather than running it on bare-metal. That way, we can run 5 ubuntu servers with one physical box - a common homelab limitation.

[–] Last-Caterpillar-513@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I used to but have recently moved to Debian server.

[–] InstanceExtension@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I run Ubuntu server as the base OS for my (pc based) pi-holes.

[–] ug-n@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Nearly every VM in my proxmox clusters are Ubuntu server. In my opinion it is a great OS for several services that didn’t require a gui. I like it more than debian

[–] j0hnp0s@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Legit question. What is exactly that draws you to Ubuntu over Debian?

The only thing that might matter for me is zfs support on the installer. But tbh I dont mind doing it manually. I treat my machines as disposable anyway

[–] baithammer@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Debian doesn't install a gui by default, except for live cd and has a smaller footprint than Ubuntu.

[–] krissovo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use Ubuntu and Photon server to run any Linux applications I need on VM’s like DNS and Grafana. I have started to use vSphere tanzu to run containers.

[–] Click-Beep@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ubuntu Server on my UniFi UAS-XG as my main HomeLab plaything, and Ubuntu Server on a Raspberry Pi 4B with a backup PiHole for when I break the main unit but I still need DNS to Google search what I just messed up.

[–] learn-by-flying@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use Ubuntu Server for anything linux related, hosted on Hyper-V.

Currently hosting Nextcloud, my beta version of Emby, an Apache instance and MariaDB.

[–] Chuffed_Canadian@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I don’t want to say it’s the most popular Linux server distribution but it’s definitely up there. Lots of people and organisations are using it.

[–] Database_Traditional@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

i'm using ubuntu server directly, no hypervisor, for my homelab

[–] RubixKuber@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I run Ubuntu both in my homelab and in my development environments for work. Out of habit, mostly.

[–] hardingd@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

We run it a work, so I run it at home as a vm

[–] youmas@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

VM only for docker when need access from outside.

Debian base.

[–] ummagumma696969@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Im running it as a base OS on an R710

[–] NSADataBot@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I run debian stable

[–] GamerXP27@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

using debian for mostly everything on my vms but I did use ubuntu before to host all my services

[–] CyGuy6587@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have Ubuntu Server running in a VM, but it's primary use is for accessing from Windows XP or Windows 98 on my retro PCs, because Samba needs to be configured differently and is, apparently, less secure

[–] wasabi_chips@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ubuntu just works. Centos has sort of gone downhill tbh.

[–] Henrithebrowser@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use Ubuntu server as my hypervisor

[–] Data9813@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Latest version of VMware ESXi, a Windows Server 2022 and loads of Ubuntu Server guest servers with docker and various other services , it just works! I also have a couple of Unix guests too.

[–] DismalAssistance1736@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I run Ubuntu server on bare metal with docker

[–] bagofwisdom@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I'm rolling Ubuntu with docker. Still run some VMs for experiments via QEMU. My 1U server in my rack is running Server 2019 that has stuff I like to keep running as much as possible. The 2U on Ubuntu has been a bit of a pain in the ass to reboot. It often won't auto-import my ZFS pools on boot. Does it manually every time though.

[–] Nate379@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If I’m installing Linux these days it’s always Ubuntu unless I have a good reason to use something else.

[–] NWSpitfire@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use Ubuntu server, it’s great and seems to just work with absolutely everything, is very reliable and it’s somewhat lightweight.

Going forward, when I need lightweight VM’s I am exploring using Alpine (not completely decided yet). But overall, Ubuntu Server is great!

[–] rscmcl@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I do in a VM in Proxmox just for Plex

hw transcoding works oob and I didn't have time to make it work with Debian Stable.

[–] Psychological_Try559@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

No proxmox here...just Ubuntu Server & virtualization.

[–] notdoreen@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

A lot?

I have it on two different servers at the moment

[–] ryaaan89@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] Fade_to_Blah@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yea I run a few as VMs on esxi, one is just a docker service thing and another is for some critical services on the lab.

[–] jerkmin@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

not in my lab at home, but i manage around 40k ubuntu server installs at work

[–] fifteengetsyoutwenty@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I run Ubuntu server vm’s on esxi. Let me know if you have questions or whatever.
