Allow me to introduce you to the best documentary you will ever watch, Soap or Die. self-funded by the world's last surviving 90s Guy and soap shoe fanatic. 20 minutes of pure joy.

Oh my god this xslayer shit

[โ€“] alligalli@feddit.org 29 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Now as an adult you can't afford using them because you will hurt yourself, badly ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

[โ€“] MeThisGuy@feddit.nl 4 points 4 days ago

exactly why I haven't

[โ€“] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm guessing the black parts slide like wax? For 'grinding' without a board?

[โ€“] ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's the gimmick, saw them around the 90s skater culture and a bit after as I recall.

[โ€“] MeThisGuy@feddit.nl 8 points 4 days ago

you can be a fruitbooter without the fruit

[โ€“] NakariLexfortaine@lemm.ee 25 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The official shoes of Sonic, at least during the Adventure era.

[โ€“] NakariLexfortaine@lemm.ee 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Goes to show how well my memory works, I genuinely thought it was supposed to still be a thing in 1 but the official deal fell through until 2.

[โ€“] Nexy@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 3 days ago

All memories works like this, its not your thing (literally i'm doing a uni work about memories right now)

[โ€“] Fondots@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Every once in a while, as an out of shape guy in my 30s, I think about buying myself a pair of heelys.

Was never a skater, never really had much interest in them as a kid, but something about the idea of rolling around in Costco while I do my grocery shopping appeals to me.

My friends do that.
Live your dream, mate.
Be free~

[โ€“] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 days ago

I only know about them because Sonic Adventure 2. And even then, I didnt know they were a thing till years later. Ive never seen them or heard of them in real life, though.

[โ€“] Puzzlehead@reddthat.com 8 points 3 days ago

Nope. Never heard of them.

[โ€“] Codilingus@sh.itjust.works 16 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I still want a combo shoe of soap shoes + heelies. I think someone makes a kit to make your own heelies.

[โ€“] AZX3RIC@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Heelys are still a thing, I wear mine too Costco.

[โ€“] AZERTY@feddit.nl 22 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Leave some women for the rest of us man. I can't compete with that.

[โ€“] skankhunt42@lemmy.ca 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

https://heelys.com/pages/grind-plate-heelys

Vote now.

There used to be a company that sold grind plates you could add to your shoes but it looks like their website is defunct.

[โ€“] culpritus@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Combine these with heelies and parkour for maximum urban mobility.

[โ€“] FidelChadstro@hexbear.net 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

As an orthopedic surgeon who wants a bigger yacht, I think this is a great idea

[โ€“] Omegamint@hexbear.net 3 points 4 days ago

I will never kowtow to big ortho

[โ€“] MeThisGuy@feddit.nl 6 points 4 days ago

i think you're onto something.

[โ€“] zaph@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago

I'm the kid who got these and heely's banned at my school. Was quite the trend setter in elementary.

[โ€“] Alice@beehaw.org 2 points 3 days ago

Never saw them in person, but man, I wanted a pair as a kid. I wanted to roll around at the speed of sound.

[โ€“] AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee 6 points 3 days ago

The only reason I know they exist is because Sonic Adventures 2 trivia videos. That, and I've seen them while playing SA2, but those are very hazy memories from when I was maybe 5-6 years old.

[โ€“] Bosht@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They were big with the rollerblade community as it was a way to grind rails without rollerblades. I was in the skater / rollerblade clique in my HS and they were relatively popular. Since I had the coordination of a 2 legged cow I went for heelys. I was cool in my own mind at least...

[โ€“] HurlingDurling@lemm.ee 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Heelys will always be cool

[โ€“] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Heelies were the shit! If they ever make a pair that will work for a 300lb, 6'6 man, I'm sure to get maimed!

[โ€“] MeThisGuy@feddit.nl 1 points 3 days ago

as someone already said, if you can make a heelie soap combo shoe that would be cool

I had them! Hurt myself plenty...

i liked these because I could jump way way way higher than i ever could on my skateboard

just go to the park and sprint at a bench/table and grind the entire length of the thing. things were fun as all hell for awhile. this was like... god... 1997?

it got old after awhile because while doing sick ass grinds was fun as hell, that was all you could really do. went back to skateboarding pretty quick.

Oh yes, I remember reading an article about them. They caused many severe injuries and I mean really many.

Nah man Iโ€™m good with my H E E L Y S

[โ€“] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

One of my friends used to have a pair, apparently they were pretty fun for a while but wore out too quickly so he just kept skateboarding.

Immediately thought of Sonic Adventure 2 lol I've never met anyone who actually owned a pair (I don't think they ever made it to Europe but I might be wrong)

[โ€“] Nexy@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 4 days ago

Always wanted one, and I never forget them because sonic adventure 2

The original soap shoes brand is defunct, but another brand, EPIC, still makes them

[โ€“] Jarix@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Never heard of these so i searched a bit.

Looks about the same

[โ€“] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 4 days ago

Heard aboutbem cause Sonic but never saw them irl. They seem like a bad idea and I skateboarded

[โ€“] lapis@hexbear.net 3 points 4 days ago

my older brother owned a pair of these so obviously they were the shit.

but realistically if I got a pair now I would simply give myself broken bones and brain damage.

They are also called Grindshoes. I also never had one of these but I am also thinking about buying a pair.
