A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

Hello r/photography,

I been having a hard go a life for the past year. I decided to do more things on a whim for myself, and one of these things has been getting into photography.

I got a Nikon zf + 40mm f/2.0, and wanting to take picture of my life, travel but mostly my 2mo old kid.

Do you have tips for a photo session? What simple props I could use? Or how to make the photos more interesting? What are you go to props or poses? Do I need to get some form of lights?

Thanks!

I’m a visual learner so it’s easier for me pick up things by seeing them, which is why I’m going to direct you to look up lifestyle blogs, kid photographers, etc on Instagram, Pinterest, or Google. Looking at tons of photos you’ll be able to see what works and what doesn’t and what’s appealing. Then try to mimic what you like. Take tons of photos yourself because that’s really how you develop your eye.

As for lighting, you don’t need to invest in any lights just yet. Natural is the best way to go for what you have in mind, imo. Though a reflector with scrim and flag would be good to have.

YouTube is a great place for tutorials if you need help learning your camera. Search your specific model.

If you’re really serious about photography, don’t be afraid to post photos and ask for critique.

I photograph my kids myself, and i love candid photos the most. I also take photos of them each year in the same location during thr same time of year, and after 4 years we’ve already got a nice collection. The leaves and the bench and the light is the same but the kids change.

I also aim to take photos with our home Xmas tree each year.

The rest are all candid shoots, unplanned.
