Prevost opposes euthanasia and abortion.
As bishop of Chiclayo, Prevost opposed the inclusion of curriculum regarding "teachings on gender in schools" in Peru, stating that the "promotion of gender ideology is confusing, because it seeks to create genders that don't exist".
An acquaintance of Pope Leo XIV in Chiclayo, Jesús León Ángeles, noted that he cared for Venezuelan refugees in Peru.
Earlier, in 2012, Prevost made comments opposing homosexuality, saying that popular culture fostered "sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the Gospel", citing the "homosexual lifestyle" and "alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children".
On Twitter, Prevost has criticized abortion, contraceptives, and the death penalty, alongside expressing sympathy for George Floyd and criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance's policies on immigration.
Because of that last part the right is calling him "woke."
Guess anything short of calling for the genocide of undesirables is "woke" nowadays, and being anywhere left of the Strasserites is "Marxist"
Something everyone should know about the Pope is that he is, in fact, Catholic. If you don't agree with almost Catholic teachings, you aren't going to love everything about them.
Conservative catholics have plenty of reason to not bow to Trump, and no real reason to. They know better than to hop on a sinking ship.
I was referring more to this brand of reich-wing:
They sure seem to have no problems voting for him
the institution*
You can't just blame "the institution" for how people voted.
Catholics by and large support Trump (anecdotally, my Catholic family seems split on him)
Exit polls showed that he won the overall Catholic vote by a double-digit margin on Election Day after losing that demographic to Joe Biden in 2020. - Source
Oh my gosh! The Catholic Church itself, unlike the Catholics in America, is an institution that wants to maintain its own power and independence, regardless of what fleeting dictator might be in charge. There's nothing moral to it, it's just the institution looking out for itself. They will long outlast Trump, so there's no reason to give up power to him.
Although now that I think about it, many conservatives would probably think that the Strasserites were definitely too left and woke, at least if they had a fucking clue who the Strasserites were
Popes choose their own name based on the saint they’d like to model during their service. Pope Leo XIV took his name from St. Leo the Great, a Roman Catholic Pope who famously met with Attila the Hun and the Vandals to prevent them from destroying Rome.
I’d say that’s a pretty good sign.
