Hey all, Commanders fan here. I was wondering what the unbiased opinion on Sam Howell is looking right now. Obviously as Washington fan, I’m definitely looking at Sam through rose tinted goggles, more specifically, a QB with a crazy high ceiling with any woes being attributed to growing pains. However I know this is definitely a biased view and even a little naive. I was hoping to get a greater understanding on what the the NFL fanbase as a whole is feeling on him, perhaps to temper my own expectations. Thanks y’all

He’s a store brand Josh Allen imo. Obv not as good as him and he has a lot of stuff he needs to clean up, but the talent is most definitely there. I’m a fan

[–] CarpeValde@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Kinda under the radar tbh. I don’t hear much about him one way or the other.

But when I’ve seen him, he looks like he’s good and keeps the commanders in games.

He replaced Justin Fields as my QB1 in fantasy. Looks like a solid, composed QB who will probably be a franchise QB at some point

I can't figure out if Howell has good weapons, a good line, a good HC, or a good OC.

When he plays the Eagles it's must watch TV. He takes a lot of sacks but it feels like he's so close to mastering that style of pocket presence.

He looks like a player that is only going to get better the more reps he gets.

[–] asianxxurlacher@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As someone who has him in fantasy, he’s pretty solid!

[–] StudyRoom-F@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I feel like if yall make the right Head Coach hiring Rivera is inevitably fired hell be really good player.

[–] OOvvV@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I thought he looked completely awful against the Bills - reminded me of when Mitch Trubisky played in Buffalo his first or second year and it was like, “there is NO way this guy ends up being good.”

That being said, I did see him play later this season and he looked WAY better. Can’t remember against who. So, I guess I’m sitting on the fence. Both surprised and glad to see that others are optimistic on him. Hope he kills it for y’all.

[–] LandLordLovin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

looks like a dawg. Makes mistakes but seems to make plays as well. I watched him while doing other things so I could be off but I like him.

[–] Insectshelf3@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

i don’t want to pay him ever again lol

[–] QuirkyScorpio29@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Great arm with athleticism and bad pocket awareness.

I think he's franchise QB material. A modern NFL QB needs to be able to scramble and he has that. And he's clearly not scared to get hit back there..so he's tough..another good quality.

Overall he's still young..WSH need to figure out their OL to protect him better but he also needs to do a better job seeing the field faster and not overhold the ball if he wants to have a long career.

If he can figure out the sacks thing, he can be a top QB.

[–] ComedianSecret419@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Disgruntled Panthers fan here. One of the many mistakes the Panthers front office has made was drafting Matt Corral instead of Howell..but, not surprising as they don't seem to know what a good QB even looks like..

[–] Philyeagles710@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I like him. He needs a better coach. I think he could be a better version of Mark Sanchez that led the Jets to 2 straight AFC championship games.

[–] Critical_Dobserver@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Dude can ball!

I can’t have a solidified opinion on him because his O Line is garbage so he’s always getting sacked

[–] shadratchet@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

From how he performed against my team, I’m assuming he’s at the top of the mvp race

[–] Mr_MoseVelsor@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think probably half of the teams in the league would take Sam Howell over their current QB situation, so there's your proof.

I think he's your franchise QB, but let's see how he does if he makes a playoff game.

[–] RealPropRandy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Get the man an offensive line.

Alright, I’ll hang up anf listen.

[–] l_Dislike_Reddit@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

No reason to think he’s not the guy.

You would be pretty satisfied with his performance had you taken him in the first round, that’s a massive steal. He’s straight up better than Pickett. He doesn’t have elite potential, but you should still be very happy.

[–] oryxherds@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Tbh his body is going to get broken behind that line before he really develops into whatever his potential is. Taking those hits year 1 is real different than year 5+

[–] TheEssentialQuality@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He is an ultra competitor with a solid mental, and great arm.

The skills are there, he just needs time and some help up front and play calling. The blocking wasnt stellar, but I think he has gotten a lot of help with the last 2 weeks with the play calling and getting the ball out of his hands quicker.

[–] 57dog@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Picked him up for Cousins after the Wash/Phila game. I’m not unhappy.

[–] Scoob8877@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You mean Slingin' Sammy Howell? He's the man.

[–] Higgins8585@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Honestly I just don't think he'll be that good. He's just solid.

[–] thedkexperience@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Just last week I came to the conclusion that Howell might not actually suck. I’m still quite a ways away from calling him good. He’s alright.

[–] GaiusQuintus@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I call him Sam Howell-itzer to my buddies if that tells you anything. He's looked good in every game I've watched.

[–] thesrl1173@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As a Bucs fan, I'd like to have him in Tampa. Do I think he's "The Guy"? No, but I do think he's a solid quarterback that under the right circumstances could win a Super Bowl.

[–] Global_Cattle_7877@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Seems pretty good

[–] kander12@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Anyone who comments outside the division is likely talking out their ass. Ain't nobody but Washington fans tuning in to watch a commanders game.

[–] TruuTree@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I needed a QB replacement for this weeks fantasy and picked him up. Honestly haven’t watched the commanders at all this season but he seems to be putting up pretty solid fantasy numbers this year.

[–] turtleswag69@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He’s got a ton of potential and I think he’s going to be very good very soon, however I feel like he pulls the old “Aaron Rodgers” to where he holds on to the ball for a while looking for an open man and gets sacked

[–] BabyPotatoNaCl@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

NGL Im surprised hes still alive after being sacked so many times. Guess hes tough as nails

[–] Kyrosiv@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He’s a guy who’s shown flashes. makes me think of early career Carson Wentz, where, I believe, it’s a coin flip whether he becomes a franchise QB or stops developing for whatever reason. But if he’s healthy and they keep Eric Bieniemy he’s got a great shot at figuring it out

[–] BadKarmaForMe@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If he got to play the eagles every week he would be heading to the HOF already. That being said if you guys get an o-line he can only get better.

My take is that there is a certain threshold of sacks that will ruin a QB (even if they're his fault) and Howell has passed that. So he's gonna have to be an exception to that rule to make it long term. But he seems like a good young QB from afar otherwise.

[–] Squishy_20@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He should’ve been taken in the 1st round of the draft. I will never understand how people thought Kenny Pickett was the much better prospect.

[–] themoreyouknow6@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He needs a veteran QB or great QB coach. See if you can speed up his head. The arm talent and athleticism is there. He doesn’t see the game quick enough all the time. Holds the ball too long. He’s promising and also QB6 in fantasy which is great for the people that drafted him late as their second QB in SUPERFLEX leagues.

[–] kodiakbear_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Imagine if he had protection

[–] JozzifDaBrozzif@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Seems pretty good mostly then a couple times a game makes a mind numbingly awful throw. Pretty impressed though and they should be patient with him as they rebuild. But teams aren't patient developing players anymore so we'll see.

[–] gyman122@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think Sam is completely hilarious, the perfect cocktail of things to generate fun discussion. He looks equal parts awesome, terrible, raw and promising. And right when you think you have him figured out, next week he fucks up your whole conception of him. It rules

He’s definitely fun to watch, whether he plays good or bad. I do think that if they’d have to extend themselves to get another QB he’s definitely shown enough to roll with for another year, assuming he doesn’t totally collapse from this point on

[–] ThorinLutgehr@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I completely hate him. Congratulations if he plays like he does against us every week.

[–] similar222@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The guy in my dynasty league who has him loves him. And he is 9th in QB points, so that makes sense. But 21 ppg for the Commanders doesn't seem very reassuring that he has long term job security. And Washington is deep for weapons with McLaurin, Thomas, Dotson, Samuel, Crowder, Brown, and some RBs that are good receivers out of the backfield.

[–] Rad_platypus7@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Whenever I watch him on redzone he’s either throwing a dot down field, scrambling for yards, or scrambling to bomb it deep down the sideline praying it either goes OB or Terry McClaurin catches it. He’s fun to watch and has definitely proven to be a quality starter

[–] doonterdoo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He's Baker Mayfield

[–] Ok-Mixture-316@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I was screaming for the Panthers to draft him.

He's way better than Bryce

Gunslinger. I like him. Get some good players around him.

[–] sonfoa@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I'm a UNC fan so I suffer a somewhat similar bias, but I was scratching my head as to how he fell that low.

He's definitely flashed franchise QB traits. He just needs to not take so many sacks.
