Hey all, Commanders fan here. I was wondering what the unbiased opinion on Sam Howell is looking right now. Obviously as Washington fan, I’m definitely looking at Sam through rose tinted goggles, more specifically, a QB with a crazy high ceiling with any woes being attributed to growing pains. However I know this is definitely a biased view and even a little naive. I was hoping to get a greater understanding on what the the NFL fanbase as a whole is feeling on him, perhaps to temper my own expectations. Thanks y’all

I think he looks great and I'm pissed my Seahawks didn't draft him.

Same with Levis, Will.

He was a stud at UNC and I think he has the traits needed to succeed as the franchise guy in Washington. Big arm, accurate everywhere on the field, and physical. Just needs development

Never going to forget the week on Red Zone where literally every play they showed form that game was him bailing out of the pocket and throwing it 35 yards out of bounds.

That is my only impression.

I’ve always liked Howell and it was odd to me he dropped so hard.

I think the best thing to say about him is this: If the draft was tomorrow Washington doesn’t need to waste a pick on a QB, I’ve seen enough from Howell to tell me he should get the rest of this year and has a chance to be the face of the future, he could still wash out but he’s done what is asked thus far

He’s a true gunslinger and better than anyone yall have started in years

[–] Jibbjabb43@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think he'd be the guy on another team in another situation. I just think a new coach and owner would favor the right first round QBs.

Jets fan that lives in the DC area here, so I end up watching a lot of Commanders games on TV.

I keep reminding people to keep in mind he’s effectively a rookie, given that he played just one game last year. With that, I think he’s looked solid; while the sacks are still an issue, he’s shown enough potential up to this point that his leash is decently long.

Give him time and a better OL and I think he’ll be pretty good. Not necessarily elite, but IMO comfortably Carr/Cousins-level.

He's nothing special. Holds the ball way too long and you can't make the excuse that he has no weapons. The Commanders o-line is below average, but he runs into a lot of sacks. I've watched him against the Bills, Giants, and Cardinals. If the Commanders are in a position to upgrade the QB position in the draft, you need to consider it. If they are punting the position and waiting for a stronger QB class, he's a decent enough low end starter to hold onto and continue to rebuild. I'd rate him like a 75/100. Hurts is a 88. Dak is a 83. Daniel Jones is a 77.

DJ>Sam? Wow

[–] joeyt7713@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Did you watch him against the broncos, eagles (x2) and the patriots? Cause he balled out

[–] Uncle151@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

A definite upgrade from heinicke skill-wise, but lacking his attitude that fires the team up. You guys def got a guy I hope he doesn't die behind that O-line

[–] blacklab@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Honestly? I only know who he is because I’m friends with a Commanders fan. He’s like a special flavor of vanilla.

[–] LoserCowGoMoo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I'm kind of surprised. He didn't get benched for brissett. Since rivera's asses on the hot seat 26 points what allowed that success

[–] Ughim50@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As a FF owner in a competitive league and Captain Kirk out for the season, I’m hopeful he doesn’t let me down as my QB1

[–] VikingforLifes@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He looks solid but inexperienced. Could go either way. But definitely promising.

[–] AutisticNipples@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

as an eagles fan, he's peyton manning

if only he could figure out how to play that well the other 15 games

[–] BadNoodleEggDemon@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Kid is a fuggin gunslinger I tell you whut

Howell > Mac

[–] koplowpieuwu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He's got good arm talent and I can definitely see a world where he is a top 10 qb for a long stretch. I think his ceiling will be capped by his sack rate though. Historically, sacks (which are a QB stat) usually stay pretty consistent over time. And even if Howell is an ironman in terms of injury proneness, his sack rate will still kill off a bunch of drives every single game. I'd guess his career will be somewhere between David Carr and Drew Bledsoe

[–] Nacua9@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As a Steelers fan I’ll just give you my honest thoughts.

I see a smaller but more talented Dereck Carr. Howell has the arm to open up the offense, he brings some level of athleticism to keep plays alive as well.

Obviously he’s taken his lumps, but that game vs Philly made me a believer. When y’all clicked vs Buffalo, I remember thinking “if he steps up against the Eagles it’s legit”

I think y’all got a good one. He doesn’t protect the ball as well as Purdy, but I’d argue he’s more physically talented. Happy for ya 😅

[–] Silver-Farm-2628@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I started him once in fantasy and he absolutely fucked me. So, screw that guy, he sucks.

[–] PaPawMustard@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I like that he stands tall and throws downfield/over the middle with confidence - you watch other young guys who look like they're scared to death to do anything except checkdown.

Too often guys are obsessed with limiting turnovers/taking sacks and it ends up shackling the offense.

Obviously the sacks need to be corrected, but give me a guy that'll at least take risks any day of the week.

[–] JoeyBird9@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Big fan this is his first year starting and he looks already very solid

Washington fans should be excited

[–] _Shoresy_69@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He's fun to watch. He either makes an incredible throw or gets sacked.

He's an incredibly valuable asset. His cap hit is $1,075,400 next year. You're getting him for probably $25M-$35M less than market value, and you can buy some really good pieces to put a good team on the field with that. He's the guy in Washington for sure.

Thought exercise: would you trade him to the Jets next year for Aaron Rodgers?
