Lots of people talking about it not being a handball at all.

The ball does hit his chest first but that only applies for deflections not deliberate attempts to control the ball. He's trying to control it with his chest and takes a bad touch. A bad touch doesn't negate handball.

it’s crazy that we can’t go a single day without controversial refereeing decisions being made

[–] SomeRandomRealtor@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

The level of officiating these last few months have gotten me to the point where I almost feel I need to take a break from watching the sport. it’s getting unbearable, watching referees completely deciding the outcome of matches. I hate the lack of consistency and it’s somehow more chaotic with tools designed to make it easier to be decisive.

This literally goes against UEFAs own guidelines for handballs this season…

This made me realize I don't know what constitutes the changing of a phase of play.

Does headed clearance like that constitute a new phase of play even if it doesn't leave the box and goes straight to an opposing player? Or does a team need to have actual possession of the ball?

Clear handball but VAR shouldn't be going back that far to call that.

If VAR wants to be used there have the VAR call it down right away

I honestly don't see what people are moaning about, or rather, I don't understand how they don't know the rules by now.

I remember being annoyed when VAR was first introduced and goals were getting disallowed for fouls that occurred after a clearance or deflection in a play. I learned that it's not a new passage of play after clearances or deflections, the same as offsides.

The other matter is the handball, VAR has been clear since it was first introduced. Any handball by the attacker, no matter the context, in the play that leads to a goal gets called back as a foul, always.

It's like we went back in time a few years ago when VAR was introduced. These complains happened all the time then but they slowed down as it was mostly consistent with it and everyone learned the rules, but apparently not.

VAR can’t fix incompetence but it will make them stand out more.

Robbed of a Darwin assist

Funny to contrast this with the Ayew goal against Spurs that they let stand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th9rGzvjQj0&ab_channel=NBCSports

These are the type of decisions that the on-field ref has to call on the spot or ignore.

No one would complain if the ref made a call here and stuck to it.

This is a much better clip than the other one that was posted.

Seeing all that takes it from “harsh handball” to wtaf?! Not the biggest fan of Liverpool, but that’s just stupid.

[–] stumpyDgunner@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I think it’s fine to pull something back after the play extends if the situation deserves it. This isn’t one of those, super borderline

[–] spacedude444@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

This was soo far back

They cleared the ball

The ball touched about 7 players before it was in the net

Its not a handball

we played horrible but this just takes the fun out of the sport, our only 2 loses in the last 26 games were this and spurs game where both perfectly fine goals got disallowed

[–] Spreeg@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Hits top part of sleeve.

Other phases of play between it and goal.

Definitely not clear and obvious.

Literallly points to spot and awards the goal.

Don't follow this one at al

[–] The_Prophet_Mo_Salah@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Darwin got away with one there what a whif

[–] KingMeroe@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I don’t see how anyone can complain about that call. Toulouse immediately call for the foul. Ball progresses immediately into their box. You’re insane if you think that failed headed clearance should ‘begin’ a new phase of play. There are like 7 liverpool players in or around the box and Toulouse never have control of the ball for even a second

[–] Wehuntkings@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Been an insane week for VAR.

[–] icheerforvillains@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Did they change the rule this year? I swear last year if it wasn't the player that scored, you couldn't review the handball.

[–] VeryStandardOutlier@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Who’s better at crying about VAR, Liverpool or Arsenal fans?

[–] aLL1e@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Yes it is a handball, but they went too far back into the play.

[–] PetalumaPegleg@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

See this is the stuff I understand people getting irritated about

In the Newcastle arsenal debate VAR experts said the rule is very clear that VAR can't rule a goal out for handball except for the goalscorer.

Is champions league var different? Or they forgot?

This seems waaaaay too long before the goal anyway.

[–] Mitch_Itfc@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Flashbacks to the rugby World Cup when they went back 4 phases to disallow a New Zealand try despite the official rules only allowing 2 phases.

[–] RadJames@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Hate Liverpool, hate VAR stealing another brilliant moment for fans to enjoy. I can’t see how anyone can enjoy this.

[–] NeonsTheory@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Why is this different from the one in the Arsenal/Newcastle game?

[–] BruisedBee@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

People don’t know the rules in here. It literally stays accidental contact with the arm following a deflection from the players own body doesn’t constitute a handball. Either the officials don’t know the rules (concerning) or they ignored them (concerning).

[–] WillowMutual@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Quick, time for a team statement against the refs

[–] Truelydisappointed@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Really don't like backing Liverpool and it was handball, but how far does var go back?!? Should've been goal.

[–] noise256@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

One of the things that bugs me about this is that from the moment Mac Allister made a 'handball', Liverpool were in a strange state where they could no longer score. Play hasn't stopped and Liverpool are in possession but if this results in a goal then VAR will go back and disallow it. Yet at the same time, they were never going to stop play for the handball after it wasn't given by the ref.

The best thing Liverpool could have done at the point would have been to give away possession or to kick the ball out because otherwise the players are in some weird limbo where play is still going, they're possession but they can't actually do anything.

[–] EclectrcPanoptic@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

If a ball went from chest to arm from a defender like this in the box it wouldn't get given as a penalty, no idea why this has been disallowed

[–] kupoadude@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Why can't VAR be implemented like Rugby? They have it down to perfection
