Fully understand they are missing Ja. And Adams is out for the year. But they still have 2 max contract guys in Bane and JJJ. Plenty of teams miss their star play and play fine. An example this year is the Kings missing Fox for 70% of their games, and they are chugging along fine. When the Grizz missed Ja a lot last year, they actually had a better W/L with Tyus Jones at helm.

I'm not expecting them to be a top 5 seed or anything. But 1-8??? The worst team in the league?? They've also had the easiest schedule in the league with playing the Blazers 2x, Jazz 2x, and Wizards (1-5 in those games). They gave Desmond Bane a $210 mil max contract to lead their team to a 1-8 start? Something is not adding up

Both of those guys are overrated

[–] PatNewbie@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The excuse/reason is that Bane and especially JJJ are overrated

[–] Jeffre33@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

5 of their 9 games have been against the trail blazers, wizards and Jazz

[–] PooperJackson@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Couldn't happen to a more likable team

Bro why do people talk like 8 game losing streaks are a catastrophic disaster. Most teams have one of these per season, chill

[–] Sweet_numb@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Still can’t really believe they just got rid of brooks for nothing and shit on him cause of the laker series,at least get something in return, really stupid.

Even elite role players get max contracts now. Both Bane and JJJ are really good players but not All Pro levels guys that can carry a team. They are elite cogs in a machine...

Losing Ja was one thing but the loss of Adams was a knockout.....best rebounder, set the league's best screens. Screening is a super important of good defense, they create space and can knock a dermfense off axis. A lot of guys dont have the 1st step to beat a defender...they depend on that bone crunching screen to give them room to work and get to the lane

Also Adams lets JJJ be able to play free safety which he is best at defensively. Now JJJ has to stay in lane more and tussle with bigger centers

[–] basketballsteven@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Well also too it's not as if they had a string of close losses.

[–] Carl_In_Charge@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Both Bane and JJJ are overpaid, and kind of overrated. Bane is nowhere near a max-level player and JJJ is a great defender but inconsistent everywhere else. They are good, but both of them would be like the third or fourth best player at best on the rest of the West contenders. They need Ja.

Give me Bane as my #2 on a solid roster and I’m very happy

[–] Recent-Curve7616@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Just shut down ja for year too. Get a top pick

[–] nickik@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Because they traded all their depth for young players, and all those young players are not not actually good. Tyus gone, Melton gone, Anderson gone.

Beyond J and Adams they also had other people out too.

The simply fact is that they wanted to get younger and younger despite already being good, and that's what we are seeing.

All the drama around Ja and Dillon have taken a toll

[–] ekb2023@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

There's no grit and there's no grind.

[–] LookLikeUpToMe@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Desmond Bane and JJJ ain’t exactly what I’d call world beaters.

[–] pericles123@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

example A of what is wrong with the 'max' contracts for guys like this. These are great supporting players, but they aren't ready to be options 1 and/or 2, and I'm not sure they ever will be.

[–] darthrevan22@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Those two guys are “max players” because the current NBA salary economy/expectations are beyond absurd and not reflective of what used to constitute a “max player.” They’re good players and solid starters, but neither is a superstar (or even a star) capable of being a #1 or #2 on a contending team, nor can they carry a team even together.

[–] jo3pro@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They are also missing Brandon Clarke, who is a rotation player for the front court

[–] tortugazz724@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

A lot of these answers are solid, but I’ll also add that the young guys who haven’t panned out were also supposed to replace Melton and Kyle Anderson, not just Tyus and Dillon. A versatile guy like SlowMo would be so useful right now.

[–] SubduedChaos@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You do realize we have Bane, JJJ, Smart, maybe Luke and then G league players. None of our draft picks have gotten better. Smart isn’t really a go and get a basket guy. And Luke is scared to shoot the ball half the time. So no one is going to do well when only two guys on your team can score consistently.

[–] jerkularcirc@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yea its called being 9 games into an 82 game season?

[–] Seref15@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Steven Adams missing is a bigger component than people talk about.

In our game against them a couple nights ago Biyombo was a non-factor and Bane was atrocious.

[–] EMateos@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They are missing Ja, Adams, Clarke and Tyus and Brooks are gone, that's 3 starters from last year and 2 good role players. It's obviously gonna take them time to adapt, and their role players are not great, as well as their depth with all the injuries.

[–] TheyNeedLoveToo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Because they lost their lynch pin, one Dillon Brooks

[–] GPap-@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think they’re both super overrated to begin with. Plus they lost a lot of pieces to departures and injury. Gonna be tough to come back from this hole.

[–] Neversleep1331@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They’re are so unhealthy, and Bane and Jaren aren’t all stars. If they were just missing Ja and Adams they’d probably be like 3-6. They’re just not good without Ja

[–] cosi_bloggs@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yes, they didn't let DRose run the team while Ja is out

[–] theblackyeti@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’m pretty sure that means that Bane and JJJ shouldn’t be in that tier of player.

[–] Gnar_Susuwatari@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Morale in that locker room will be different to last year. Grizzlies had a better record when Ja wasn't playing last season, but I think with all the drama, injured players, and kicking Villain Brooks off the team, they probably feel undermanned.

Yup? They need Ja Morant badly & they missing Dillon Brooks presence who they didn't want back can't wait to see🫢 HOUSTON vs MEMPHIS Nov 22 & Dec 15 👀👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

[–] SteelCutOats270@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Small amount of games

[–] LimberGravy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The team is so hurt (suspended) the main account ran out of characters on Twitter to post the injury report and had to switch to a picture of it

[–] Sherrodactyl@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Because JJJ is better on the stat sheet than on the court. Loves fouling and chucking threes and scared of rebounding.

[–] FightMiilkHendrix@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You’re surprised a team missing two of their starters is bad?

[–] Rich-Hat-29@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah those guys aren’t good

[–] CornCob_Dildo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The west is absolutely stacked this year. Everyone got better and the grizzlies didn’t

[–] Content_Explorer949@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Grizzlies can't win without Dillon Brooks.

Here I said it!
