I want to live in a world where a person like Kor can accept a person like Dax.

In The Culture series by Iain Banks, gene modification is so advanced people can will themselves to change sex without surgery over I think some months. The process is so effective procreation is possible - one character, a male, loved being pregnant. So he'd transition, have a baby, and go back to being male every couple years. And it's just super normal. In fact, people who never change sexes are viewed as odd.

Sigh

I'm happy being as I am, but if I were to live thousand years and it were easy, why WOULDN'T you change just to see what it's like?

[–] Anomalocaris@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Same, if you can, why not check it out.

Oh 100%. I don't have dysphoria but think of myself as NB anyway. I'm comfortable in my body but I'm certainly curious. If transitioning weren't as difficult and costly? Yeah totally let's see what girl me looks like. I think I'd be fairly hot as a girl haha

If generic engineering becomes that easy, humanity will become nothing but massive, shambling genitals. Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal comic.

I just watched this episode recently. If Klingons don't care why should humans?

[–] qjkxbmwvz@startrek.website 62 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Because not all humans strive for honor.

[–] d00phy@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago

Truer words were never spoken.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Honor is a flexible concept, especially for Klingons.

If we are being pedantic, Trills are a bad analogy for transsexuals. Every new Trill host is a brand new person with only the memories (with some extras) of the previous hosts. This distinction is emphasized in several episodes. So while Klingons are rather hyper-traditionalists, they can't really complain about a person having another person's memories.

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 5 points 1 day ago

FWIW I agree, but I would say imperfect instead, on account of the many trans people I have heard say they related in some ways.

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 day ago

Complain? No. But they shure as shit treat them as is they were the same individual in those memories. It even causes problems.

"Though I may change, my heart does not, for I am but its reflection, and may that reflection be more true with every passing day".

No clue where my brains pulling that one from, but it felt fitting. It feels like such a simple thing, the want to be accepted for who you really are, yet it brings a complex hurt when you realize how hard that can be to get.

I’ve heard something like that before, and I can’t place it either. Beautiful line, though.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 8 points 2 days ago

Maybe it is something regarding the Bible? A Google search doesn’t bring an exact result for that quote but a bunch of different Bible verses are in the results however.

This makes me so happy and sad at the same time.
