A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

I'm an intermediate photographer who just started getting into sports photography. My 70-200 f2.8 takes fantastic shots, but I'm running into a problem where my DOF is too small, and the subjects are often slightly outside the optimal focal range. I'd like a solution to calculate the focal range beforehand so I don't have to guess the best aperture. Keeping the aperture open is preferred because of the less-than-perfect lighting, but obviously not at the cost of sharpness. Anyone have any tricks or solutions for this?

Digital DOF is a free app, depth of field calculator.

If your camera supports it, use edge focusing rather than calculating distance.
