I hope IWOC-IWW can help organize around this bs. My first thought is sit down strikes. I feel like slave labor is particularly weak to that kind of action.

Counterpoint: solitary confinement sucks

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago (2 children)

they can't isolate every prisoner at the same time, and by engaging in a sit down strike, they can't fill those spots with people afraid to fight back.

[–] NovaPrime@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

True they can't throw everyone into solitary, but they can enact a lockdown which comes with its own particular cruelties and inequities

[–] interceder270@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So they're just going to lockdown everyone forever?

Doesn't seem like a viable strategy to me.

[–] sock@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

its a prison. if they can't do slave labor for a profit there's no reason not to lock them down forever.

[–] Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

That reminds me of the words of Jews during the lead up to WWII. No one wanted to be the first to die, so they all died. It's easy to say to sit down and protest when you're free.

Hopefully America can figure out how to end slavery for good soon.

[–] masquenox@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You are assuming that the US political establishment has ever really wanted to end slavery. It's a very shaky assumption.

[–] kool_newt@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Right, history is arguably various groups of entitled people trying to enslave others under various names and methodologies.

[–] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

Sorry, best we can do is slavery with extra steps.

What would they do to you if you refuse to work for free?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago

Throw you in solitary, which is torture.

Feed you nothing but nutraloaf, which is torture.

I'm sure they can come up with other ways to torture you for not doing what they say.

What would they do to you if you refuse to work for free?

Hello... it's a prison?

[–] interceder270@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can you elaborate a little more?

[–] masquenox@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's a prison... they can make you do whatever the hell they want.

They shouldn't but they can.

[–] interceder270@lemmy.world -3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Not literally, no.

At least not without repercussion.

[–] Random_user@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Shit, AITA that thinks inmates should be cleaning up trash on the side of roads?

[–] MaxVoltage@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Inmates actively DREAM of those jobs lol

Only people who have never had even a time out think work sucks when you are locked up
