What‘s the argument for the NBA to make free throws such a long interruption, such a long process? How does the NBA benefit from that?
Players have rituals and need some time to calm down, breath and focus. 10 seconds is more than enough for this. Like when it's the playoffs, players should be given the time collect themselves.
It would be mental for guys to have like less than 5 seconds to shoot the ball. The majority of players are good to go in under 10 seconds though.
I don't think OP is talking about the 10 second countdown. Most of the delay is waiting for players to get lined up.
Sometimes it takes a full minute of real time for a player to shoot two free throws.
Refs don't press free throws because it's a stoppage where teams can do substitutions.
You wouldn't want to not give a team a chance to sub someone in as needed because the ref wants to press the player to shoot free throws faster.
They gotta cater to their golden boy Attemptafreethrow and his nepo baby brother mascot. Or so are words I see here
They normalize it to help Giannis (the face of the league)
Karl Malone was notorious for taking ages to shoot free throws. There is (was?) a time limit that's rarely enforced, but hostile crowds would start counting out the seconds while he was doing his foul line ritual to mess with his head. I don't think it did much, but I found it funny. There is a rule...
Rule is 10 sec once the ref passes the ball.
Before that there can be substitutions and refs have to make sure the players are lined up.
You don't want some Chris Paul smart guy to get the ball, catch an opponent not yet positioned and then rush to shoot the ball to then call a violation thay delays the game even more.
You had the 12 second countdown against Giannis. Fans got into it, was a whole lot of fun for everybody but those that value their time.
Something that stood out for me a while back when I had season tickets. Free throws don't seem like they take a long time at all at the game. There were so many instances of not even knowing I was watching the second shot just because there are other things happening on the court.
Ita kinda like how they say a watched pot never boils. The TV cameras are focused on the player shooting (obviously) so you expect them to shoot it right away.
I hate that phrase. I watch water boil all the time. it only takes a few minutes

Years ago things changed drastically. I was at the game. Wilt Chamberlain jumped so high that his penis got tangled in the net. So they invented shooting free throws at the other hoop while engineers were summoning a fire truck with ladder to untangle the ensnared trouser snake.
