Even if he is considered a byproduct of a great offensive system, he still has proven that QB evaluation definitely is not an exact science..

[–] DickNDiaz@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Imagine if GEQBUS started this season and posted 15 TDs to 5 INTs. It's not impossible. Look at Sam Howell.

Jimmy woulda checked that down so fast it woulda hit McCaffrey in the back of the head (or missed him entirely)

QB’s that can process quickly THRIVE in Shanahan’s offense. It’s why he and Matt Ryan were a perfect match. Purdy is just like that. Yes he has a lot of weapons, but he’s a good QB. Especially in that system.

[–] Philthy91@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm convinced that's the most important trait in drafting a QB. Anyone who is drafted is going to have arm talent but making a read and throwing the ball quickly is what separates a back up with a top level starter.

I don't know of any QB that is considered top tier that has slow decision making.

[–] Delphicon@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Always has been.

But seriously, that’s the difference between the perennial backup who ends up being a coach and the Brady/Manning/Brees types.

It’s not enough to understand the game in theory and work hard; you have to be able to “digest” what you’re seeing as fast as it happens.

It’s kind of like reaction time, it’s like a mental trait that is largely genetic and then you have to work to build all the skills around it.

Ex QBs rave about how he plays the position. He jumps off the screen with anticipation and accuracy in film review. I honestly can't imagine why anyone would doubt the kid at this point. Stop trying to figure out what he will be. Right now he is playing like an elite QB in this league. That is all that matters.

There is one reason Brock gets discounted: he was the last pick in the draft and his first start he was the 3rd string QB. If the no. 1 overall was playing like Brock, the media would be touting him as the next joe burrow

[–] DickNDiaz@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's a fair enough point, but if it were Burrow on this team, he'd be something beyond what he has done in CIN.

[–] DJBarber89@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Man, did Purdy fuck your mom or something? You’re all over this thread talking shit about him lmao

You’re apparently a 49ers fan. Just be happy…

[–] DickNDiaz@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It's more like people who make a fair criticism of Purdy is fucking yours.

[–] Shiddy_Wiki@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

*when he's not forced to play with a scrambled brain

[–] suchfresht@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

AKA playing the position

[–] pepenuts98@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

There's an insane guy in here swearing up and down that Brock isn't that good. Jimmy looked good for a few stretches but never this good. Brocks stats through 17 games now since he's played that many are better than any season Jimmy has ever had. He's in his 2nd year. Also having a top D helps but he's not just managing the clock or checking down. He's throwing the ball down field at an absurdly efficient rate, throwing with great anticipation and extending plays long enough for his playmakers to get open. Jimmy G would not throw down field, would often make bone headed throws right at defenders and took unnecessary sacks. We can pretend that Jimmy and Brock are interchangeable but it's clear as day that they're not

[–] MidKnight007@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Seems like that cb bit on the check down underneath so why is it a smart throw when it seems like the intermediate route had a bigger window? I’m not understanding that part.

[–] BoneFistOP@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

pass had to be past 9yds, and purdy has already gone through his progressions on the left side of the field. Regardless of the "bigger window" in theory, he'd have to react to the window opening and immediately get the ball out on a risky throw. He knows Aiyuk's route is to fake an in, then go out so he throws the ball with anticipation to where he's going to be. If he's accurate then its a free, easy 11 yard play.

[–] MidKnight007@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This to me is more helpful than the video thanks man

[–] ExclaimLikeIm5@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Purdy Gewd week

They might even get brave enough to air that cheesy Toyota commercial they did for him tomorrow.

[–] sactomkiii@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He legit might be a robot

[–] DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Brock purdy is who we thought Mac Jones was going to be

[–] Upset_Ad3954@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

And that's not a bad thing

[–] AOA001@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

People say the same about Tua. But he’s balling out and doing well.

I’d take a Purdy or Tua any day of the week over a Josh Allen or Deshaun Watson who have the “upside, arm and talent”.

[–] Fatbatman62@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

We really comparing Josh Allen to Watson now? You sir, do not know ball.

[–] Greatcouchtomato@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Lol you wouldn't take Tua over Josh Allen. Allen even with his flaws is still clearly better than Tua

[–] ImABsian1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Dude is elite and I can’t wait till he gets paid big

[–] curgl@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

We’ve got one full more year of peanuts for Purdy before he can get paid, enjoy it while it lasts :)

[–] MoistySquirts@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’m so tired of this narrative “system quarterback”. Literally just some buzz word to get views on ESPN.

The reality about players like Purdy, Hurts, and even Tua is the coaches calling plays that highly benefit the strengths of their quarterback. All 3 are vastly different schemed offenses that suit the play style of the quarterback that will put them in the best position for success. The best coaches of all time have and will always adapt their scheming to the benefit of their studs. This specifically is why Philadelphia’s offense fucking stomps teams, they know that when hurts gets hot with AJ brown that they can run the ball freely. Especially when there qb can just get a free 2-3 yards when needed. You don’t call a play like that when your qb is built like Mac Jones, mainly cause he is structured like 6 ply toilet paper. Everyone wonders why nobody can run the brotherly shove like the eagles but it’s so simple, there are literally no other quarterbacks that have the lower body strength like Hurts, if there are I want to know for research purposes. LOL. Ok rant over.

TLDR: Calling a quarterback a “system quarterback” is a buzzword bullshit excuse for a coach calling good plays that benefit their quarterback.

[–] Duckys0n@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And then you have guys like Allen or Mahomes not having nearly their best seasons, due to surrounding talent/poor coaching, and you start to realize that hmm. Maybe everyone needs a good coach and guys to throw to 🤷‍♀️

[–] MoistySquirts@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Absolutely. Look at tua, gets tyreek and a genius behind the script and they start launching bombs, causing surrounding receivers to become better by association.

[–] OnceMoreAndAgain@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This is over analysis... Nice throw and catch though.

[–] just4kix_305@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I wish more football fans were interested in watching all-22 film content instead of just believing dumb narratives all the time.

[–] yodpilot@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I wish most of the national media ie Patrick, Nick Wrong, Cowherd watched the all 22. They clearly don't.

[–] Snoo-6@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He’s a late round pick so he won’t get respect until he wins a ring. If he was a first round grade people would call him cerebral, a great leader, blah blah blah.

[–] DigOlBick99@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Source: his mom

[–] Fun-Skin-626@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It really make me wonder do people even watch the games? Do they even know football schemes? Brock isn’t perfect but his tape clearly proves he’s an elite processor with some solid 10 yard spring mobility with excellent pocket pressure. Hes a master of the playbook too. Hes playing this well because he’s focused and working hard to stay on top of every detail in the offense. Anyone saying we ran a similar offense under Jimmy G is either a moron or they didn’t watch the games. Kyle did not trust Jimmy whatsoever with these throws.

[–] BoneFistOP@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

His 10yd split is like a milisecond slower than Lamar's, and as fast as CMCs. His Agility is elite, and his arm is far stronger than it was during the combine.

[–] donta5k0kay@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

God I hate the Niners and San Francisco

Give it all to Oregon, we don’t need north California

[–] -M-Word@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Ok, but we’re taking all the water and agriculture with us

[–] notmyplantaccount@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I get it's talking about the defense, but this headline is written like the 49ers offense has complex schemes designed to throw off their own QB, because it's redundant to say that at the end, as all QB's in the league are facing the same defenses.

[–] Losdangles24@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think it’s somewhere in the middle. He’s a good player but it’s very possible he’s excelled bc of coaching and his surrounding talent.

If he had switched places with Justin Fields what do you think would’ve happened? Would Purdy be heralded as an elite qb playing for Chicago the last 2 seasons?

[–] Xno_Kappa@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

And yet he looked mediocre when he didn’t have his All Pro LT and All Pro WR. Funny how that works.
