Diehard Sony Fan, always wanted to get both of the Z1Rs, finally pulled the trigger last week(along with the FIIO K7). The FIIO K3 will be paired with the IER-Z1R. The FIIO K7 will be paired with the MDR-Z1R. Wanted to get the TA-ZH1ES, but currently out of budget.
My 1AM2 and N3AP can finally retire.

What does the Z1R do well?
I think it's a well balanced, spacious sound with a lovely bass shelf. Still detailed. "Elevated U shape," if you like.
For the MDR-Z1R, overall a very enjoyable experience,it has slight emphasis on the vocals and bass, but not to the point where it gets fatiguing.
Vocals are clear and Bass is clean.
I owned one for 3 years. It has excellent bass and great detail. It's a warm sound signature but there is some amount of treble wonkiness. But if the song is right it essentially makes you feel like you're listening in a world class concert hall.
It's also one of the most well built luxury items I've ever used (no joke). After all that time of constant use its joints and headband were completely silent. It felt overbuilt for the task as expected of high end Sony audio.
As a new owner of a Walkman (Japanese ZX707), I was wondering why you were retiring your high-end Walkman and buying DAC/amps when your Walkman could have driven both of those headphones/IEMs just fine. Then I realized that in classic Sony fashion, there are two products in their catalogue that both end in "1AM2": there's the Walkman NW-WM1AM2 and the headphones MDR-1AM2. I presume you are retiring the headphones?

Love the IER. Had the MDR, but I mostly just use IEMs so I sold them, but really considering buying them again.
hopefully if all goes well in my job atm, i will be joining the Z1R club next month Christmas. please god dont let me die before then.

I had fiio k7 I don't think it sounds great with full size headphones but really good with Iem.
Sony owns Audeze now so you should look into the lcd-5 now

Excellent choices of headphones. I had the MDR-Z1R + the WM1A + TA-ZH1ES at the same time for about a year. It was an amazing combination, and I never should’ve sold the set. I never got a chance to hear the IER-Z1R, but I always wanted to.
I would really try the focal stellia if you’re in the market for CB. I tried the Z1R, hd850s and the stellia and it was the clear winner

If you are referring to the price, they were already lower than the MSRP, coupled with the 11.11 discount in my country, they are like another 10% cheaper.
If you are referring to the value, no it is definitely not worth the value. You can get around 70 to 80% of the performance of these headphones/iem for way less, especially in the iem space. These headphones are for people that are willing to fork out a lot of money, just to get that last 20% of performance. Plus, I am a diehard Sony Fan.

I have the IER. Love it. Nothing compares. I used to have the MDR, but I didn't like the way the connectors on each cup dug into my shoulders when I was lying down. So I sold them. I do miss them. Maybe I'll buy them back again at some point.

I had spent a lot of time demoing these some months back, ultimately picked up Grado RS1X’s, but these were incredible and I left impressed.

Getting myself a pair of the MDRs as well as my first pair of high end headphones. Never used an amp before - do you recommend getting the K7? The TA-ZH1ES looks amazing but costs a fortune!
