I assumed this might have been a late 90s article about the "dangers" of internet addiction.

It was from fucking 2015. I really really hope it was satire.

oh man, in 98 it was nothing to spend 5 hours a day online.

Keep in mind that 35% of that was connecting and reconnecting.

Getting that download to 95% and a phone call coming in...

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 8 points 10 months ago

OMG yes!!!!

Or someone in the house using the phone in the middle of it…

Why would your download fail if a phone call comes in. Genuinely curious.I mean I know you guys were using voodo magic back in the day to get internet access. But still wouldn't it just get paused and resume once call was over?

Dial up internet used phone lines. The same phone lines your calls came in on. Anytime someone called or someone tried to call out, you were very likely disconnected and had to reconnect. Early on, there were no download managers that would pause and reconnect you to finish a download if interrupted.

You could easily do 90 minutes in 2005. Hell, late 90's too, just not continuously with people using the phone lol

I spend 90 minutes online before I even get out of the bed.

these kind of stories feel like they're labeling things in a pejorative light to manufacture peer pressure so that people will think it's bad; like "quiet quitting"

It’s from ClickHole, which is a site The Onion started parodying viral content sites like BuzzFeed or Bored Panda. It was sold to Cards Against Humanity in 2020.
