A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

And I paid half. Is it ok to ask for it back until we can reschedule?

Your photographer cancelled on you and didn't offer to give back your deposit?

Yes, I'd ask for the deposit back and not reschedule....

If they are not going overboard to make up for inconveniencing you then find someone else...

I always say a non-refundable deposit. But if I cancelled I’d definitely pay it back. I’ve honestly still paid it back if a client cancels too.

I had to cancel last minute recently due to my kid being injured at school and having to go to the ER for a concussion. My other kiddo had to go with the only other family member available. I processed a refund and gifted them a session on me immediately. Just like with a DR, I require 24 hour notice. If I can’t respect them the same, I’m giving them their $ back. It’s the right thing to do, even in emergencies. If they choose to reschedule, they can repay but at a heavy discount.

If you're going to reschedule, then no, if you're not going to go ahead with them now they cancelled, then yes.

I'd be asking for a full refund.l if you don't think rescheduling will suit you

I am a photographer and although I've never had to cancel a job for anyone yet if I were in that position I'd offer to reschedule (and if its short notice I'd make sure you got something extra in the package free), or if that wasn't possible I'd refund in full. For me it would be as much as my reputation as anything else.

I agree that you should get reimbursed. However, no one is asking this question.

What does the contract you signed say about refunds?

If you didn’t sign a contract, you didn’t hire a professional photographer.. or at least not a very business savvy one…

If the photographer cancelled, then you are entitled to your deposit back. Other way around not so much... Although check your contract.

If I cancel for any reason, I refund 100%, no hesitation. Reputation is worth so much more than one gig. I have never canceled yet, but I'm also new to pro photography, so haven't been busy enough yet to run into such an issue.

What does your contract say?

You definitely deserve all your money back.
