So I see this movie pop up on amazon that seems to be another remake of war of the worlds and its 2025 so I was like. mmmmm. Good basic story and I wonder how awesome the special effects will be. I should have known that if I had not heard anything about it that it must be bad. Super low budget and filmed in such a way you would think it was something they made during covid. Maybe it was and just finally got released or something. Anyway do not be fooled. Its just plaein aweful in almost every way imaginable. Its so strange as it has ice cube and eva longoria.

OP thanks for taking one of the team and watching it.

I am not remotely surprise. There hasn’t been a great War of the Worlds product since the original Orson Wells radio show.

I liked the tom cruise one well enough.

The movie had three incredible scenes:

  • The initial tripod rising out off the ground in the intersection
  • The attack on the ferry sequence
  • The plane crash sequence (Even though that was hampered by the movie’s ratings)

Other than that it was two hour spent with the most annoying characters filmed and some really silly story points and never mind that happy ending.

I liked the main character figuring out the car would work and the way they fled with it in some ways being smart and some dumb but that feels the way it would go with some randos. The van hijack and everything around it with violence and surge to the ferry. I like the hiding out in the cabin and the guy getting weird and why the son ran off and the blood farming and escape from cage captivity. So for me it was more good than bad. I leaned into the little girls issues which is kinda funny because one reason I did not like the jurassic park book is the little girls character is way more annoying like that and they sorta split the little boys things between the boy and girl. Back to that war of worlds I sorta saw the anoyingness of the dad, son, daughter as just sorta humanity and family dysfuncition.

I saw that at just the right age to be utterly horrified by it. It gave me lots of fears and nightmares. Not necessarily about alien invasion (that was part of it I guess) but more about the breakdown of society and how quickly everyone turned savage, feral and selfish. To me, that was the true horror of the film.

When viewed from that angle, it is a more successful storytelling endeavor than if you view it as an alien invasion movie.

Although the part where they're captured and that one guy gets sucked into the weird orifice on the tripod is still chilling.

Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of War of the Worlds goes pretty hard (in places)

There have been many, many bad re-tellings of this novel.

I’m actually partial to the 1953 movie as it is a lot of fun, and well done for its time.

You just have to watch any five seconds of the trailer to know it's terrible.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 7 months ago

That is on me. I did not watch the trailer and my wife is much better about doing that check. I knew something was wrong within a few minutes of starting it. Heck I was wondering for a bit if it was some other war of the worlds story and we would never see the tripods.

I would like to add also 'The Gorge' to this list (even if you didn't ask).

This is a cold war, zombie, elite sniper, horror, love story that has.....for some reason, a drum solo (duo?) scene and Sigourny (sp?) Weaver.

The only way to watch it is stoned to bejeezus....

Thank you! Went under my radar. Downloaded and will check it out tonight - as a so-bad-its-good connoisseur I have high (heh) expectations.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 7 months ago

thank you as if I had known I would have skipped it but then I get wrapped up in sunk cost :)

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 2 points 7 months ago

I enjoyed it not stoned.

Ok watched it - def so bad it's good. Really funny and a good laugh with it, but a bit different from other ones because you could really see the potential for a good movie if the director/writer picked a lane and stuck with it. The love story was a fucking joke and the literal moment the badass, top military trained sniper chick see a cute boy she has to put on her booty shorts and start dancing and being all "OOHHH MY GAAWDDD cute boy!!" and writing signs is so jarring I literally burst out laughing. The cinemetography and the hallow men cgi/character design/costuming was all done really well though. Literally beat for beat ripped off the last 15 mins of the bourne identity though, like shamelessly. Super predictable in every sense. Overall a great recommendation, thx.

Yeah you could reeeealy see the potential but the different plotlines were so over the top....great bad movie, glad you saw it (enjoyed?) lol!

[–] lowspeedchase@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 months ago

Hell yeah I did, thanks again!
