If you're going to comment some generic answer about why do we always set unreal expectations for players I don't want to hear it. It's an NBA sub and I like the hypothetical.

Yes, if all the other players are almost as good as him, but he is just a scootch better

[–] fuzzynavel34@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think he could be with a really strong supporting cast. We’d definitely need a better 4, as much as I’ve enjoyed Toppin’s flashes of brilliance this season

Maybe? I feel like people vastly underestimate how good the best player on a title team usually is. The last six Finals MVPs have been Jokic, Curry, Giannis, LeBron, Kawhi and Kevin Durant.

Almost 100% of the time the best player on a championship team has to be an MVP level player. I'll go back to 2010 just to have a clean finishing point, but you can go back further too.

2010: Lakers (Kobe)

2011: Mavs (Dirk)

2012 and 2013: Heat (LeBron)

2014: Spurs (Duncan, but tbf this was mostly team ball)

2015: Warriors (Curry)

2016: Cavs (LeBron)

2017 and 2018: Warriors (Curry and KD)

2019: Raptors (Kawhi)

2020: Lakers (LeBron)

2021: Bucks (Giannis)

2022: Warriors (Curry)

2023: Nuggets (Jokic)

Every single one of those teams had a player who had won an MVP, except for the Raptors who had Kawhi, a guy who very well could've won an MVP if he had ever played enough in the regular season for it. With that in mind, the only players not on that list already I could see be the #1 on a championship team is Luka, Embiid, and Tatum. In the future I could see a few different people get to that level like Ja, Ant, even Zion if he ever stays healthy long enough to put it all together.

All those teams are also stacked.

[–] whatitdobabyyy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If Halliburton was on a stacked team he wouldn’t be the best player on the team realistically.

I think Hali can be in of your max players on a championship team but maybe not the very best player on the team

[–] Philyeagles710@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah that’s why they won a championship.

[–] Bulbolito_Bayagbag20@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My new favorite non Lakers player. Yes!

[–] prettyflyforahentai@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I mean how many PG's are the best player on a championship team? I'm gonna go with no.

[–] QBert999@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Maybe? It doesn't seem beyond the realm of possibility.

[–] trollittoG@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Duh, this possibilty questions are so pointless

Tyrese Haliburton is overrated as hell, he just plays for a decent team. His 3 pt % is inflated, he has never closed out a game and he's terrible on defense

[–] Funny-Transition7869@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

team is ass without him, has been his whole time here

[–] SeeingThings123@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I love Hali but a “traditional” point guards typically aren’t the best player on a championship team.

A perfect pairing though would be Embiid or… AD? 👀(don’t mind my flair)

[–] Betaateb@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Probably not if we are being honest. He is great. But only one guard has been the best player on a championship team in recent history and that is Steph Curry. Is Haliburton Curry level? Maybe he can reach that level, but I wouldn't bet on it yet.

[–] Acrobatic-Reaction-7@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yes but not in the way you may think. Haliburton is like the modern day version of Steve Nash. Nash could potentially lead a team to championship but certainly not as the primary scorer, I see it the same way with Haliburton, he could lead a team to a championship and be the best player on the team but not as its primary scorer.

[–] anesthesiologist2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If the team around him is good enough.

[–] gab_owns0@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Probably.

I'm erring on the side of yes so that way I don't get caught in a thread in the future eating my words after Hali leads Indy to a chip 😂

[–] ButtVader@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Nope, hes 2nd banana like Trae

[–] arvtovi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The more I watch the NBA, the less I can predict who is going to turn out to be at that echelon. I thought John Wall would be an MVP/Championship-level PG for example. Is Shai a championship level guard? I don't even know.

[–] RayCashhhh@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He can be a very good primary ballhandler and No. 2 scoring option, but idk about being the best player.

[–] Colangelo_Ball@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think if his shot form looked like Isaiah Joe’s, rNBA would already be carving his HOF plaque.

[–] Professional-Doubt14@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He’s the best player on his team and leading them to regular season wins, it’s impressive. But he is playing a regular season friendly style of ball. All the flashy passes and deep threes disappear late in playoff games. Even if he reaches Dame Lillard level of playoff performance it will be tough to win without an elite big or wing beside him. Playoff Jamal Murray is no slouch and he needed Jokic to win.

[–] koenigsaurus@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Right this moment? Maybe with a deep team a la the 00’s Pistons. But probably not.

But given how much he’s improved over the last few years, who’s to say if he keeps elevating to an MVP-type of player? It’s definitely possible.

[–] JGxFighterHayabusa@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ll believe it when I see it. He needs a Batman to actually get there.

[–] YoHoochIsCrazy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If you’ve watched him I think you know he can be.

Steph Curry comparisons are not entirely unfounded. He’s got the skill and the swagger.

[–] Material_Unit4309@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well he better be MVP level too. When he’s in that discussion we can have this discussion. At least have to be All NBA, Perennial All Star with a top 4 seed Contender type kind of guy. Random teams nor guys don’t just win Championships and Championship MVPs.

[–] No_Independent8269@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

i can tell youre not really familiar with Haliburton. youll see.

[–] LoWE11053211@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

i think the rise of Haliburton has a lot to do with Carlisle and the Pacers OF than we gave them credits for

[–] mkk4@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I feel like Tony Parker was the best player on at least one of those Spurs teams that won a championship.

[–] Mainly-Driving862@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Imagine the team with Haliburton, Adebayo, Mikal Bridges and Laurik Markannen. Everyone esenare role players that fit. Will Haliburton be the best player? I would say you can argue it.

Can this team win championship? Possible

[–] Dat_one_lad@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If he had someone almost as good as him and every other start was rlly good, like the Spurs when they basically had 4 stars that could be 1-2 options

[–] UnsuspectingS1ut@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I don’t think so, but I do think he’s good enough to elevate a roster to championship contention if that makes sense

[–] fallenfromglory@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

As a lifelong pacers fan I will say yes!

[–] DrButtLump@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Maybe yes or maybe no
