This year

Kyrie and Luka on - +2.95 Net rtg (286min)

Luka on Kyrie off - -3.5 Net rtg (274min)

Kyrie on Luka off - +5.6 (142min)

Last season in the small sample size, +7.64 with Kyrie on and Luka off (319min) +1.94 with just Luka (1800min)

Luka has been averaging 30-7-7 but his impact does not seem nearly as high as Jokic who is averaging similar numbers, now obviously Jokic is much better but the point is the numbers are similar yet the impact is not close at all. Now this could be because his defense is dreadful but either way there is something missing

Also Livelys impact has been huge with - +5.67 Net rtg (337min) with him on the floor and -2.11 Net rtg (431min) with him off

I mean, it's a story of Lukas career.

Mavs with him on the floor are +2 since he was drafted. And +1.4 without him.

Don't think any other super star has similar on off. They crush their minutes and their bunch sucks if they are just a good team or their bench is good I'd they are an elite team.

Mavs fans will always tell you, Luka has to play with the worst starters and worst bench guys, so thats why they can't blow out his minute.

bones for luka

it is a great deal isnt it?

[–] Savings_Fig_6233@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Please, we both know Mavs would ask for Bones AND Mann and clippers would end up backing out of the deal

[–] CIark@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

NBA wouldn’t allow Luka to the clippers cus that means they cant have the annual Luka vs Clippers playoff series

[–] qpwoeor1235@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

That team would go undefeated when NBA starts allowing 5 balls to be in play at once

[–] jumboponcho@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

His defense is horrible, and they don’t have DFS to cover up for the lack of coverage on the perimeter

[–] maybeacademicweapon@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Salty hawks fan depressed about not taking him instead. He has improved significantly on defense and put a good effort last night even when his shots weren't falling. He can't guard small guards simply due to a lack of lateral speed but is actually very good at guarding 3/4s in the post, kind of like Harden.

[–] MiopTop@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yes. He's still plenty impactful. Top-10 player for sure, but PTS-REB-AST-TS% would make you think he's in the conversation for the best player in the world but I think he's quite clearly not at that level.

Stats are numbers abstracting out a quantity determined by observation and propositional logic. They are only so accurate when considering the totality of a nba player's impact.

Brace for it Mavs fans, we're turning on Luka this season

Luka slows down the pace too much and the only time other players get to touch the ball is when they get a pass from Luka. With kyrie, everyone is involved and they play with a faster pace.

[–] Round-Revolution-399@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

It is odd that despite Kyrie’s off the court issues and his reputation as a flashy iso player, he is extremely good at sharing the ball with others

[–] Smell_the_funk@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Mavs are 6th fastest paced team in the league this season.

[–] suplexx0@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

he might be doing well with stats

but on the vibes per game scale? Not so much. The vibes per game scale is an innovative stat that allows high iq judgement of nba players that uses high quality metrics such as “the eye test” and “gamefeel”.

Sure, he’s getting 30 points per game. But on vibes? He’s one of the least impactful players in the league after accounting for the eye test and vibes. Unless he gets those vibes up, he just cannot lead a team to a championship.

[–] Solid-Confidence-966@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yes, he has great box score numbers and is an elite offensive player but his defense is an active hindrance to his team.

[–] Complex-Past-3368@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I observed the same thing with Giannis this season. Even in the games he went off, he had a negative score when he was on the court. Anybody care to explain why. He isn't a liability on the defensive end as well. So why does he have a negative score even when he dropped a 40??

[–] k0ala_@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Giannis on +1.37

Giannis off +3.93

The difference is pretty small as well as both being positive, Giannis also had a slow start to the season

[–] Complex-Past-3368@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I’m not talking about the whole season. I’m talking about the 5-6 game stretch where he dropped at least 30 every game, and still had a negative score. Dame who played worse than Giannis in those games had a better score than him. I still don’t understand the reason for that

[–] n0th1ng10@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

That heliocentric ball has diminishing returns when u add another star. Luka and Kyrie don’t fit well.

[–] Simple_Wait_7286@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

As a Luka fan, I think the biggest difference is that a solo Luka offense is far more predictable than a solo Kyrie offense.

Everybody on the court knows Luka is gonna have the ball in his hands and try creating everything. Whereas with Kyrie, he doesn’t mind deferring to teammates like Hardaway which keeps things unpredictable. When Luka is on-fire or teammates are making the shots he creates from the attention he draws, the Harden-style of offense works great. Otherwise, it can be stagnant.

And obviously defensively, Luka is extremely inconsistent in his effort and the Mavs don’t have DFS or Maxi Kleber from a couple years ago to hide his flaws. Kyrie isn’t good either, mainly due to size, but he does try a lot harder than Luka on that end.

That said, Luka is still a top 5 player for his talent and individual achievements, but his impact is not nearly enough to consider him in the best player convos.

Generally speaking, star players that have very high On/Off possess following 3 characteristics:

  1. They are not a ball hog. They facilitate fast ball movement.

  2. Extremely efficient passers who prefer passing to open teammates to taking a shot themselves

  3. But they are extremely efficient shooters themselves

[–] noknownothing@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

His d is worse than Kyrie's.
