Start black and start color?

[–] hakase@lemmy.zip 52 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

This is the correct answer. There's even a slight plastic indentation to let the user know that both of the buttons in question are "start" buttons.

I think the design is fine.

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 33 points 1 month ago

That's also how I saw it. Nonetheless, that's really poor design.

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

I didn't notice the indent until you pointed it out. It's probably slightly more apparent in person

Technology Connections would say: Read the manual.

Technology Connections would say: Read the fucking manual.

FTFY

[–] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 2 points 1 month ago

Ah yes, if I remember right he referenced this when he said it.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

you kidding? he'd do a whole rant on how design should be intuitive and you absolutely shouldn't need to read the manual for something as basic as this

probably pull out a whole international standard on button design

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 45 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Red is stop, white is start in black and white mode, green is start in color mode.

[–] DioramaOfShit@lemmy.world -2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Pretty easy to figure out huh? The poster must be a dum dum

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

It would also be "easy to figure out" if each button had a different color and there was a table of what each color did. Neither design is good, though. No one should have to "figure out" what such a simple set of buttons does

The problems with it are so apparent, defending it makes me think you just wanted to argue about something today lol

A few of you mentioned the "indent" - I never even saw it until I zoomed way in on the photo I took after you mentioned it. I can't even see it in person. My vision isn't great, but I think that suggests even more strongly a bad design.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

You shouldn't need an indent to make it clear what all the buttons do lol

Terrible design.

[–] thezeesystem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago

Completely valid as accessibility is extremely important and not having it accessible for people with poor vision automatically makes it a bad design

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Indeed, it's terrible. And the button on the far right is for toggling wifi.

[–] RymrgandsDaughter@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

This honestly straightforward...

[–] Kissaki@feddit.org 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

As we can see on the left, this seems to be a scan, copy, and fax device.

The white and green buttons are labeled with Start, with a physical indent to indicate the relation. The white one is labeled with black [Start], and the green one is labeled with Color [Start]. The red button is labeled with Stop to stop the process and Exit to exit menus.

It's so obviously clear! /s

[–] Cuberoot@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Push the white button to make it start in Black mode.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago

Careful you don't get shot by police

[–] KiwiTB@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Looks fine, no issue with the design.

[–] maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

By the way, do you still have operational fax lines where you are (not eFax)?

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Anyplace wired with plain old telephone lines could do fax. Though I believe the POTS->cable company converters won't work with fax.

Printers that include a built-in scanner often include fax because it's easy. They just need to add a modem and some software, and the modem hardware is dirt cheap.

[–] mike_wooskey@lemmy.thewooskeys.com 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I agree, if you have POTS then you can send a fax if the printer has a modem installed. I don't happen to have a POTS landline.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

POTS is typical provided along side internet on the ISP modem

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Most business is over VOIP and so then is the fax.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Obviously, the labels are above the button they correspond with unless the label is underneath its button.
