I knew it didn't happen that often but I guess until recently I didn't realize that LeBron is the only person of the last 20 years to accomplish this, which he did twice.

Tim Duncan was the last before him, in 2003 the year LeBron was drafted. So during LeBron's time in the league, he is the only player to do so.

In history 10 players have done it:

  • Willis Reed (1970)
  • Kareem (1971)
  • Moses Malone (1983)
  • Larry Bird (1984, 86)
  • Magic Johnson (1987)
  • Michael Jordan (1991,92,96,98)
  • Hakeem (1994)
  • Shaq (2000)
  • Duncan (2003)
  • LeBron (2012,13)

Who can you see joining this list?

It's tough because I feel MVPs are often given to players prior to their team being fully ready to win a chip, and by the time their team is built out, voter fatigue kicks in. Happened to the warriors, Bucks nuggets. Happened to lebron in the years he didn't get mvp but won a title.

Seems like Jokic and Giannis have the best chance this year. And I'm a homer so I'll throw KD in the mix as well.

If KD wins MVP he’d be the oldest player to win MVP since Jordan in 1998, both at age 35.

I’m even seeing some people saying LeBron might pull off MVP at 39, which would be unprecedented.

I mean yeah jokic technically didn't get it last year, but we all know it was he

[–] JG951519@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

He didn’t get it, so no it wasn’t him.

[–] The_Aught@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I mean it was, just more of a wink wink kinda deal.

a) i’m gonna go to my grave saying it’s horseshit curry didn’t accomplish this in 2015

b) i think it’s relatively possible this year, jokic is currently the leader in early mvp talks, and the team doesn’t look significantly worse when healthy, so i’d say he could manage it. also, to be a homer for once, tatum also has a chance. if the celtics can do exceptionally well this year, which they seem at least capable of, he’s their MVP pick, and he’s been a dark horse for a couple years anyway. similar story for the playoffs, they are an incredibly talented team and he’s pretty solidly the alpha

Would've seen it last year if it weren't for race bait bs from the media

[–] TayOs1998@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Curry should’ve won FMVP in 2015 and Jokic should’ve won MVP last year. Objectively.

[–] Legal_Peak9558@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Steph should have won it in 2015 and jokic should have won it last year in my opinion.

[–] letr1xter@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Lmao Joker got robbed last year

[–] capitalistsanta@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Jokic will probably do it this year. He will definitely get a sympathy MVP to make up for the voters fucking him aka Perk trying to start a race war in Embiid's name, and if they couldn't stop him last playoffs I don't see how anyone will beat the Nuggets this year.

[–] habarnamstietot@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Jokic 2023, when they correct past mistakes made by voters.

[–] kertikath@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I think Jokic should’ve had it last year but Kendrick Perkins pulled out the race card

Jokic was better overall than Embiid in the reg season and he proved it when the playoffs came

[–] naturalCalamity777@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Shouldve been Jokic last year tbh

[–] AnxiousLeopard4650@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Jokic would have done it last year if the league did pander to Embiid to shut him up.

[–] Striking_Moose_8747@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

SHOULD have happened last year.

[–] MastodonFuture9487@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Larry Bird sighting

[–] Thymewilltell69@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Don't fn care

[–] lovemesomemarvel@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Pretty much the dudes who could win mvp. Booker, Jokic, Giannis, Tatum, Embiid, etc I could see these teams winning the finals

[–] dadsmilk420@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Joker should've gotten it last year, but Embiid committed highway robbery because people were so up in arms crying over the fact that LeBron and MJ never got 3 mvp's in a row

[–] fwzy_34@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Jokic last year...

[–] Islanduniverse@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Jordan did it 4 times… that dude was nuts.

[–] Slim-Ticket@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

And was the scoring champ and all defensive first team those years too. Like tf this man wasn't real

[–] Greaves6642@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

We just did. Everybody knows Embiid got pity MVP

[–] belizeanheat@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

We should have had it last year so yeah this is obviously one of those things that tends to happen

[–] Doobie_Howitzer@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Embiid wasn't going to be the FMVP silly

[–] skinneykrn@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I mean, Jokic got robbed of his MVP last year

[–] bbbryce987@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Obligatory mention of Curry getting robbed for fun in 2015

[–] Charming-Breakfast48@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Once Wemby gets there my money is on him doing it.

[–] ginobilislefthand@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Wemby 2027-2029, all under the tutelage of Coach Ginobili

[–] --solitude--@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Finals MVP is an overrated award.

[–] Friendly-Transition@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Low key it should have happened last year.

But Jokic is probably the closest bet to it happening soon. Giannis is another one but he has Dame now and I imagine that will siphon off some of his support for MVP. Maybe Luka if Dallas makes a run

[–] clashcityrocker20@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I think Giannis, Jokic, or Luka would take it over Lebron.

[–] 2020IsANightmare@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I would think so.

But, we can't ignore the elephant in the room.

Giannis or Jokic could have the BEST season of their career.

And many would vote for Luka or SGA or ANT (as long as the Wolves can keep counting on Rudy and KAT LMAO!!!!!!!) for MVP just because they are someone new.

[–] Adam0529@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I'll take the value bet in JT this season

No bias

[–] ndm801@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Normally Jokic last season...

But maybe doesn't sound good, if one player is three time consequent MVP and at the least final MVP at the same time :)))
