Jordan's 1986-87 season was outrageous - 37 PPG, 27.8 FGA, 38.2 USG%, 82 Games

Who do think can tie or break Jordan's single season PPG record in the next 5 years? I think the most likely candidates are 1) Embiid (no explanation needed) 2) KD (if he chucks aggressively and doesn't care about his efficiency), and 3) Luka (if he pretends he's getting re-married every week)

Harden has gotten the closest in recent memory during the 2018-19 season - 36 PPG, 24.5 FGA, 40.3 USG%, 78 Games

For some reason I read this as Jordan Poole and I was really confused.

Probably some big man like Embiid. A lot of players that could won't have the mentality to chuck that many shots. KD could but has never been a chucker.

[–] musing_wanderer3@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Oh wtf 🤣🤣🤣 I would never make that claim lmao - Jordan Poole is going to be lucky to avg 20 ppg this season

[–] Green_Space729@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

27.8 shot attempts is insane.

I don’t see any player being allowed to do that today.

[–] ShittyDentalPlan@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I think any of the top scorer now, if you put him on a team with Ben Simmons, and Draymond.

[–] HOFredditor@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Is it even a record ? Wilt scored 50ppg no ?

But even then, I don't think anyone will pass MJ, unless it's on a tanking/injured team where the superstar's high usage is the only option.

I think hardens 36 was as close as we are likely to see. When I compared them I actually thought hardens season was more impressive if you take assists into account

[–] Initial-Distance-338@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Just take minutes into account. Harden got 36 in 36 minutes and Jordan got 37 in 40 minutes.

[–] Nuclearsunburn@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

That would be a basketball crime if he broke that record lol

[–] DotAGenius@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Bro would have to take 50 shots per game

[–] Steko@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Wemby is the only one I think has a chance and he has a long climb to get there. But his ceiling represents a different kind of unstoppable than anyone else in the league currently.

[–] Aeuce@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I don't think he's ever going to have the conditioning to average over 37ppg, and also his defense is just to good and probably takes too much energy away from his offense.

But what would Micheal Jordan Poole average in a season?

[–] icanseeyourpantsuu@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

The top 10 is looking like Wilt Wilt Wilt MJ Wilt MJ Harden, MJ, Big O, Harden

If you count elgin baylor's 48(only) games, then he's top 3. Without that, the Top 3 scoring machine off all time(w atleast 68 games) in a single season are as follows:

Wilt

MJ

Harden(the only active player in top 10)

[–] musing_wanderer3@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Oh I 100% agree that Harden is under appreciated. At his peak, can we say a top 5 offensive player of all time?

Likely nobody but Luka is the likely front runner if I had to pick.

I do think there are only 2 current players that could’ve done it in their primes tho - Westbrook and Harden.

Westbrook in 16-17 (MVP year) had bad enough teammates that he could’ve shot like 30+ times (had 24 FGA per game) a game and nobody would be mad. Also had the highest usage rate in NBA history that season and only played 34.6 MPG. Three more 2 point field goals, two more 3s, 6 more FTs or any combo of each per game would’ve been feasible if he sacrificed assists. If he played 38-40 min and attempted like 5-6 more shots, would have been doable.

Harden in 16-17 (year before MVP) also dominated the ball to historic levels and averaged 32 on only 19 FGA in 36.4 MPG. If he also played 38-40 and attempted like 25 shots, very well could’ve done it.

[–] musing_wanderer3@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Great points! I would choose Luka as the most likely rn too

[–] Giannis1995@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

At some point Trae Young will get tired of his current playstyle since it doesn't lead to a lot of winning. He will turn into a score first guard. And he will go crazy. I don't think the Hawks will make a huge jump but his scoring numbers will.

[–] Oly1y@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Checked the numbers. If a player averaged 50/40/90 splits and attempted 14 2s, 11 3s, and 11 ft, they would average 37.1 ppg and have 3042 points for the season, putting them 1 point ahead of mj.

[–] Kervdog666@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

It’s definitely Anthony Edwards

[–] Taliesin33@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Actually if you adjust for pace and mpg, Kobe 06 is the best scoring season, followed by Harden 19 then Jordan 87 (admittedly Wilt isn't included in that list but pace was crazy back then, think his 50ppg worked out to around 30ppg with modern pace).

[–] Original-Common-7010@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

If harden couldn't break it with his historical usage and 3pt shooting i dont see it happening anytime soon

[–] BruceBrownMVP@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

If Jokic got a fair whistle and decided he wanted to average 6 assists per game he'd average 40

[–] Recent-Curve7616@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Weren’t those MJ teams not very good? Like first round exits or not even making playoffs

[–] DrHydrate@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Jordan made the playoffs every year he was on the Bulls.

And yes, he lost in the first round, but I wouldn't say the team wasn't good. They were a middle of the pack team with decent role players like Paxson and Oakley. The problem in the playoffs is that the Bulls played the Celtics, the defending champions and the #1 seed in the East, a team that had 4 HOFers on the roster.

[–] Siuuuu_d_06@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Luka probably

[–] iCE_P0W3R@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I feel like a few players could do this but wouldn’t want to because it would either mean that they’re on a bad team or the team is playing poorly.

My initial choice would be Luka, but I think Steph has the capability to do so given how the Warriors are playing right now.

[–] TruthFreesYou@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Someone on a bad team, with fewer games to play, who wants to make a statement: Jah Morant — THIS SEASON!!

[–] Routine_Size69@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Maybe Luka if he gets in better shape and becomes a little more selfish. He's had usage close to Jordan's, but he gets more assists. If he somehow ends up on a team with zero help, I think it's possible he could do it. Super unlikely though.

[–] kababed@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Booker after KD retires. Would need a couple 70 pt games

[–] TheLostStar1@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Luka so overrated in here, guy cant even diet and you talking about beating Jordan. Delusional

[–] SeirezZ@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago
[–] bravof1ve@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Embiid if Maxey were to get hurt and he had to just take 30 shots a game

[–] DEEZLE13@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

28 FGA is crazy

[–] Raging-Timberwolf@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago
[–] anonkebab@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Curry if he got a whistle

[–] jh58010@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Jordan Poole
