Google wasn't much help and I was curious. There's a loud contingent calling for Arthur Smith's job. If the Falcons win the south but lose handedly in the first round of the playoffs, could he still be fired in the off season?

Tony Dungy fired after making the playoffs.

[–] TheDarkGrayKnight@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Tony Dungy made a wild card in 2001, they lost in the first round, then got fired. Bucs won the super bowl in 2002 with Gruden.

Bengals fans wanted Marvin Lewis fired after every playoff loss if that counts. To be fair, he was probably some of the issue, the team wasn't controlled enough at times causing some of those goof-ups that led to losses.

Jim Caldwell made the playoffs with Detroit in 2016 and was fired at the end of the 2017 season when they missed the playoffs.

TBF, Matt Stafford was pulling wins out of his ass on that 2016 team.

Marty Schottenheimer is the famous one. Fired after going 14-2.

And that pretty much happened to Harbaugh too if we’re all being honest here.

Mularkey for the Titans was fired after a 35-14 playoff loss to the Patriots in 2017 (they were 9-7)

Marty Schottenheimer got fired after a 14-2 season because the Chargers lost their playoff game

[–] 96919@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

He got fired because he didnt get along with the GM.

[–] The_Big_Untalented@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Weren't there rumors that Marty wasn't all mentally there and showing signs of Alzheimer's when the Chargers let him go? Apparently their two coordinators, Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips were the ones who were really running the team and both of them left to take head coaching jobs after the season.

That’s not why he was fired

[–] tgcm26@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

A glorious day that was

[–] GooseWearingATowel@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

RIP Marty, but the Chargers would never have won a playoff game with him.

Titans fired Mike Mularkey the offseason after winning a playoff game

[–] bjohnson203@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Marty Schottenheimer, 14-2 and fired in 2006 due to differences with FO, they didn't win a PO game though.

John Fox was fired even after making the playoffs and making a Super Bowl the year before. And he absolutely needed to get done.

Jim Harbaugh went 13-3, 11-4-1 (lost SB), 12-4, and then 8-8 and was fired (or maybe quit, but either way lost the power battle with Baalke)

Not during the offseason, but Ben McAdoo was fired the year after making the playoffs.

Hue Jackson and Ben McAdoo were hired in the same offseason.
In year 1, Ben McAdoo went 11-5 and the team went to the playoffs.
In year 1, Hue Jackson went 1-15.
In year 2, Ben McAdoo was fired during the season.
In year 2, Hue Jackson went 0-16 and still kept his job.

Dwayne Casey I think in the NBA was fired by the Raptors and won Coach Of The Year lololololol

[–] MankuyRLaffy@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Ted Nolan of NHL fame got fired by the Sabres after winning COTY because Hasek said he wouldn't play another game for Nolan.

[–] broke-collegekid@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Plenty I’m sure. Nagy got fired at the end of 2021 after making the playoffs in 2020. Doug Pederson was fired in 2020 after making the playoffs in 2019.

[–] younggun92@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Lovie Smith was close. Fired 2 years after making NFCCG, in a season he went 10-6 and just missed the playoffs based on divisional record tiebreaker.

[–] cmoney253@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Mike Mularkey got fired after winning a playoff game and losing in the divisional round

[–] GarlVinland4Astrea@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

LOL. Yes. Marty is the obvious answer.

[–] AutomateAway@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

John Fox lmao

Just happened to Kingsbury

[–] Hungrycheesemonster@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

John Fox in Denver

[–] Undead-Paul@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I don’t know if anyone mentioned him yet but Marty Schottenheimer was fired after going 14-2 and making the playoffs

[–] ItsNotFordo88@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Mularkey was fired a month or so after winning a playoff game resulting in the Vrabel hiring.

[–] Kenny_Pickett@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I like how you thought Google would help answer this question

[–] PolarBearLaFlare@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

In the NBA you can even get fired after taking your team to the finals lol

[–] NotAnAlienFromVenus@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

It just happened in 2020.

Bill O'Brien led the Texans to the AFCS title in 2019, and beat the Bills in the WC round of the playoffs that year before losing 51-31 to the Chiefs.

After the Texans started the 2020 season 0-4, O'Brien was fired. So not only was he fired the season after making the playoffs, but he was fired 5 games after winning a playoff game.

And obviously the whole Deandre Hopkins fiasco...

[–] prongtine@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I was going to say Jimmy Johnson, but you didn't ask if any coach has been fired after winning back to back super bowls.

[–] XCellist6Df24@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Jim Harbaugh?
