Hey there, it’s me. This is just me sharing my opinion on the new special since it panders towards me in a sense.

I agree with every point the special is making; not every movie needs to be this big preach.

Like, as a gay person, I’m tired of Disney, HBO, Netflix, all these big companies that make a blank state out of great material.

Of course there is great gay shows - (The Owl House, Atypical mm.) but those have something else to keep you watching where the gay is front and centre.

Let me use The Owl House as an example. A teenage girl is thrown into a world of demons and must traverse her way back to the human realm.

Cool plot point, right? However by Season 1 episode 16 “Enchanting Grom Fright” it’s made clear that there is going to be a lesbian relationship between the human girl and a demon girl name Amity.

However, they address this in Season 2, Episode 8 “Knock knock knockin on hooty’s door” where Amity and the human girl -Luz get together.

And that’s the last time that it was brought up and the show continued like normal, just with them being in a relationship

I’m getting sidetracked, my point is - there can be homosexuality and social issues in a show with out it “pandering”.

And it also feels like by Disney that they’re trying to “make up” for past homophobia so now they’re really just pushing gayness on to everything they can and use it as a sort of shield, if that makes sense.

Anyway, this is just one gay person’s opinion, feel free to comment your own - straight or not. If you read all this - thank you.

SW 7: Finn is built up as a deuteragonist with equal screen time to Rey and hints to his Force sensitivity.

SW 8: Finn is sent on an irrelevant side quest because, oops, China doesn't like black people.

SW 9: Finn is... around. Sometimes. To scream "REEEEEY!"

While we're on the topic... how do you feel about Will and Grace? I've always wondered.

[–] mellowfellow261@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Very insightful perspective. Personally, I think another possible explanation for why Disney and all these other companies are pandering to so many minority groups is mainly because that’s where the money is. Yes, a lot of executives at Disney in particular may feel bad because of the companies bigoted past, but I don’t think they’d be pushing it quite so hard if that was the only reason. Especially since 2020, social progressivism has become really popular in pop culture, so there’s a big market incentive to peddle diversity and inclusion so much.

That’s not to say that diversity and inclusion are bad things. Of course it’s an amazing thing that we can have actors and characters with diverse backgrounds and whatnot. But I think people are starting to catch on that the “Panderverse” is, well, just that. Pandering in an inauthentic and potentially ill-intentioned manner.

you think you’re special bc you have a gay opinion? lame

[–] Prudent-Feed-8488@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

That’s not what I’m saying, you jackass. You don’t have to read it, you dumb motherfucker. I was just saying that since it panders to me in a sense that Disney nearly makes all gay characters and I was just providing my opinion.

Where does it state that I think I’m special? I was just providing my opinion as a group that special “panders” to, you moron.

[–] Prudent-Feed-8488@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Also, this you? Either, you are rage baiting or actually just a moron and i can't tell which one.

Yet another gay man here. I liked the episode. And while I’m not always sure if the people using the “make it gay and lame” meme are laughing about the absurdity or laughing at gay people, I can’t control what they do. Ultimately, I was excited when Disney said we’d get some gay characters. It felt like a huge step, then we got an unnamed man (directors cameo) in Avengers: Endgame and two unnamed lesbians kissing in the background in Rise of Skywalker and honestly I became pretty frustrated. Eternals and Strange Worlds features a gay protagonist. And in both cases the gay character is in no way relatable to any gay person I know. Ultimately the queer representation feels like what straight people think gay people want. It isn’t authentic and I think in a lot of ways that’s what people are reacting to.

A gay character will always have their queerness be apart of their character. But it’s like Disney doesn’t know how to depict that without either making them the straightest couple in the movie (Eternals) or making their life so removed from the gay experience of being a youth (Strange Worlds) that they might as well not have even done it. I want gay characters who are complex and messy and all kinds of things. It’s one reason why South Park actually has solid queer representation. Tweak/Craig, Mr. Garrison, Mr. Slave, Big Gay Al. Most of those are wild stereotypes but they’re also their own characters some are just wholesome like Tweak and Craig some are sex weirdos and others are downright psychopaths (Garrison).

I saw someone say this in the box office subreddit but somewhere along the lines Disney decided they would make dour and depressing films for 20-30 year olds but kept the emotional maturity of their children’s films. Everything they make these days feels so grim, it lacks joy and they decide to use that to celebrate diversity? Wtf Disney.

Great comment. Thanks.

[–] killbydeath87@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Does Disney even have alot of gay characters? I mean I don't remember any ones from the MCU if there are they aren't all preachy about it.

Same with Star Wars but I don't much watch much of the Disney stuff....and Indiana Jones? I guess there was a female lead but she wasn't gay

[–] flecom@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

pushing gayness on to everything they can and use it as a sort of shield, if that makes sense.

that's been my personal observation, but as a cis male I tend to keep my opinions to myself... the way they bring so much attention to the sexual orientation and/or race of a character seems to me like it's counter productive (again, observation as an outsider so please feel free to tell me I'm wrong)... if a character is gay or a minority but you point it out and make it front and center it makes it seem (to me) like they are saying those things are not normal and should therefore be singled out to show how progressive they are for allowing such "not normal" things in our films (not sure if that makes any sense either)

unrelated but I think the series Foundation really was a good example of doing diversity right, characters were all sorts of races genders etc, and nobody pointed it out, it was never in your face, they were just the characters, just people that were part of a story

[–] Prudent-Feed-8488@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Exactly! A character can be gay and in a gay relationship without it being their whole identity and personality and it being mentioned that that character is gay all the fricking time.

[–] Thesilphsecret@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I agree about the lazy pandering, but there are so many people out there who really need to take Cartman's words to heart -- it's just as lazy to hate everything woke on principle. It's very frustrating that now, any time we do something gay with a character who wasn't presented as unambiguously and explicitly flamingly homosexual in their first appearance, it's going to be accused of pandering. Tim Drake (a.k.a. one of Batman's "Robins") is a sixteen year old boy who recently came out as bi. Lots of people don't come out of the closet before age 16 -- there's nothing weird about a character coming out of the closet at any age, but there's especially nothing weird about a character not coming out of the closet until their teen years. But nobody seems willing to accept that Tim likes dudes too. They have to scream and cry about how it's "pandering." Which is just silly. Tim is allowed to kiss boys.

[–] Prudent-Feed-8488@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Fr,a movie can be “woke” and not be pandering and have a compelling MC who happens to be gay, how’d have thought? A gay character doesn’t automatically make a movie “woke” or “pandering” IF THEY ACTUALLY WRITE THEIR CHARACTERS PROPERLY

[–] Thor1138@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I just finished watching She-Ra, and I loved the gay characters because being gay wasn't their personality, but they were, in fact, complex, interesting characters that happened to be gay. Owl House is definitely on my list of shows to watch in the future.

[–] blindsavior@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Dragon Prince also has some well written gay characters, highly recommend!

[–] ConfidentReaction3@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

PUT A CHICK IN IT AND MAKE HER GAY!

Jokes aside, I'm gay too. Personally, I love LGBT stories. I LOVED Rocketman, a whole damn movie about a gay musician.

When Hollywood, Disney, all of that put gay people in things for the sake of diversity points, and censor it for other countries that don't accept it, it's obnoxious. It's fake representation. That's the pandering. Real representation is what is important.

[–] Prudent-Feed-8488@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

So true. Like don’t just write a gay character for pity or diversity points. Make them human, give them flaws, don’t just give them hardships.

Like I said, Disney is just trying to make up for the homophobia they had in the past and they’re trying too fucking hard.

[–] erosmoker@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

How awesome would it be if they had LGBTQ characters in media that were just normal people and it wasn't their entire character arc that they're gay. Like yeah, AL is gay, but he also runs a super cool animal sanctuary and he volunteers as a scout leader too. His gayness is secondary to all his other cool attributes. Wouldn't it be cool if we had characters like that?

[–] BrokenNotDead1997@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (11 children)

As a gay man, Agreed. You can have a gay couple in a show but you don’t have to make a big deal out of it. THATS where it becomes pandering.

I mean…look at how many “first gay characters” Disneys had in their movies in the last couple years: Onward (a cop who was in one scene, mentioned her wife), Lightyear (a lesbian couple with a kiss and then a few minutes later they’re both dead), Phastos from Eternals (a kiss with his husband and some sweet talk).

Disney made SUCH big deals out of these characters when really only Phastos was a big character. The other two were glorified cameo characters that frankly only seemed like Disney was box-checking.

I mean Alisha from Lightyear was black AND gay AND a woman, that’s almost all the boxes checked…..then they immediately kill her AND her wife off. So a character that literally has no development, yet is so progressive.

That being said, they made a lot of comments about Indiana Jones…was Helena in the new one supposed to be a lesbian? I never picked up on that.

[–] joji711@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

"So a character that literally has no development, yet is so progressive."

But the executives have to do that so it will be easy to delete the character if the CCP or some Middle Eastern government told them to, don't want to risk the profits

[–] Mysterious_Alarm_309@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

That light year situation is lame and gay literally. (and chick too)

[–] HansWolken@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I'm not American so I don't follow American media. Was the lightyear couple really a big deal? From my perspective the only ones who cared about it were the ones protesting it. Was there like an official Disney statement promoting this?

[–] ConfidentReaction3@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

They forgot Zootopia where those 2 male antelopes were married to each other.

[–] BrokenNotDead1997@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Okay I forgot that, I don’t think I even realized that. I gotta go back to watch zootopia, it’s been years

[–] Jetstream-Sam@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I'm writing a book and for everyone who doesn't have a partner in the book, I was going to go back after finishing to assign sexualities

The only one I had written as a joke was that the drill sgt character is straight, but he is only that way at work and when he gets home he goes into sub mode and does exactly everything as his wife commands, and he essentially just roleplays as her when he goes to work, but looking back I feel like I might be offending somebody

[–] Guy_Underscore@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

There was definitely no confirmed sexuality for Helena from what I can remember, so I don’t know what that’s about

Disney does that on purpose to only give the gay characters like 2 or 3 lines so they can get all the woke money from people obsessed with that but can also easily edit the gay characters out to appese China and the Middle East

[–] bichonfreeze@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

You forgot Beauty and the Beast with Lafoue. Don't forget that Disney felt so strongly about those they edited out his kiss in other regions.

[–] BrokenNotDead1997@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I knew I forgot one!

[–] WhereIsTheMilkMan@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

No, Helena was not a lesbian. Matter of fact, I think it’s either mentioned or implied that she had a past relationship with one of the male characters in the movie? I only saw it once so can’t remember specifics.

I didn’t quite understand a lot of the Indiana Jones stuff because it felt like they hadn’t actually seen the movie. She’s not a replacement for Indy, she’s one of the sidekick characters, and I never got the sense that she was going to be taking up the mantle. I made a post about it here but was downvoted quite a bit, with people telling me that it was “heavily implied” that she was intended to replace Indy through marketing and behind the scenes comments, but I guess I missed all that. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Disney stops Alex Hirsch from making the officers in gravity falls a couple yet also wants all the praise for their 2 second easily edited out cheap “representation”

[–] Jefcat@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Gay man here. Absolutely agree that there can be homosexuality included in a show without it being “pandering”. Craig and Tweek have evolved without really pandering. They’re kids, like all the others. And they happen to be gay. That was how I grew up myself, a gay kid in a relatively conservative white bread suburb. Personally, I like stories with compelling LGBTQ characters. One that don’t pander. Schitt’s Creek was a good example, too.

[–] alliandoalice@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I’m happy they showed them still happily together in the pandemic special as adults too

[–] Punkrocker80@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

They were kind of gaslit into being a couple too

[–] Bluelaserbeam@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

As a gay man myself, I have a lot to say about the modern landscape of LGBT+ rep in media and how I personally don’t feel represented by them.

But what I’ll say for now is that when getting into stories, I want to care about—you know—the story. Give me a reason to care about the characters and plot. Make me feel invested in that. Whenever companies like Disney mention anything involving the representation of marginalized people, I see it as a sign that the writing is going to be trash and they’re trying to make up for it with representation. That’s exactly what anime fans correctly predicted with Crunchyroll’s original series, High Guardian Spice.

[–] Dudeist-Priest@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

For me, I generally don’t like remakes at all, but if you’re going to do it you better do something to make me not wish I was watching the original. Making a character a different color or orientation is fine but that better not be the only thing.

[–] WatchBloodRain@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

It’s like in the new little mermaid how all of Ariel’s sisters are a different ethnicity, king trident must have a harem

[–] PBoeddy@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

That they could've pulled of quite good, because the sisters are meant to represent the seven seas iirc. So having each sister represent one ethnicity (or mixture of ethnicities) living in proximity to the seas isn't to far off.
