Ah yes, a fine example of small government free market.

Uninstall TikTok. It's spyware anyways.

When is there a dating/networking app coming to f-droid?

OpenRelationship coming soon to F-Droid

There is at least one already actually, it's called Alovoa.

I don't think it's federated however, that would be nice to see.

[–] black_flag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

Federation while maintaining any semblance of privacy would be nearly impossible.

Always has been.

Any tips on how do I get my parents banned from WeChat? Too much cringe media and blasting wechat short videos on loudspeaker.

Should I just change their profile pic to the ROC flag for the lulz? We live in the US btw.

[–] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not entirely sure, I've never had to decouple someone from social media. My relatives are hopelessly addicted to Facebook.

A suggestion would be to try to gently persuade them of the harms of WeChat, but not to be too pushy about it, could cause them to push back or use it on secret. If they care about their privacy, perhaps taking that route would be beneficial. Having some articles on hand that affirm your argument can help too.

How do I even pushback? Its like the iMessages/Whatsapp of the Chinese Diaspora.

Feels like a lost cause... 🤷‍♂️

They even gave microphone permissions for voice messages (because typing is hard apparantly, maybe because its not 26 letters... idk).

What is better than government spying on you? TWO governments spying on you (China (via Wechat) and USA (via Google)).

... aaaand banning TikTok in our network.

RIP free speech

So the difference between the current ownership, who may be handing data over to the Chinese government and are using an algorithm that promotes undesirable content for "engagement" and propaganda purposes, and the new ownership, who I'm sure will happily sell data to anyone who pays up including thinly disguised fronts for the Chinese government, and will also use an algorithm that promotes undesirable content for "engagement" and propaganda purposes is . . . what, really, at the end of the day?

American dudes getting rich instead of Chinese dudes, though they'll make the Chinese dudes rich in the process.

[–] MisterCurtis@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Just another propaganda machine

[–] tias@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 week ago

"In about two weeks"

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

How do you "control" an algorithm?

Doesn't China still have a copy of the code?

[–] brendansimms@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

the algo is worthless without users. What it should say is ..."control its users feeds by directing the algorithm to show government sanctioned content only"

[–] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

does anyone care? tiktok is a dead platform that only idiots use.

[–] PoopMonster@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

It's a very lucrative and controlling platform. That's why they want it.
