Damn so I can't set my dating preference to from 9 to 14 anymore :( Will have to settle for 16 year olds /s

[–] Modest_Toxic@feddit.uk 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Dammit not the dating apps!

[–] Ironfist79@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

How will Ted Cruz find dates now?

The comments here seem to be missing a salient point.

In order to determine if a user is under 16, you need to determine that for every single user .. including you!

This means that your personal data will be harvested in order to determine if you are over 16 or not.

[–] SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 week ago

Maybe people over 16 shouldn't be on the internet either

[–] darkkite@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 week ago (2 children)

gotta keep the kids safe from pinterest lmao

[–] collapse_already@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can we keep me safe from Pinterest? I would really like to exclude it from my search results on a permanent basis without having to explicitly filter it in my query.

[–] mmmac@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

I've got Pinterest filtered out of searches, this has been a feature of kagi for ages

[–] Meron35@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You joke but pedophiles use Pinterest to stalk and coerce young girls.

I met my wife on GitHub. (/s)

[–] trk@aussie.zone 9 points 1 week ago

You weren't scared to commit

[–] rozodru@piefed.social 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

to those wondering "why Github?" because it's not about protecting 16 year olds doing pull requests it's about getting YOUR data/IDs. They don't know whose under 16 or over 16 to access said sites so they need the IDs of EVERYONE. that's all this is. it has nothing to do with protecting kids.

If I was a government or some firm that harvets Data I would absolutely drool at potentially having a source that is Github to get said info. I would LOVE to harvest info of developers, coders, etc.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

Yep, they get your ID and can associate your account and activity to your person. These are always anti-privacy laws, not "protect the children" laws. That's just what they say to get people to give up their freedoms.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 21 points 1 week ago

How about we just stick them all in airtight lead-lined boxes? Then they'll be truly safe.

You must be 18 or older to submit a PR

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's a weird list. I've never considered GitHub to be social media.

[–] PoopMonster@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Anything is social media if you try to censor hard enough.

[–] sleen@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago

And there we have it, a manipulative government that grins at the fact that we all let this oppression to go through.

This is all a result of our naivety, we let our age discrimination to prosper, and now we're going to be left with big brother watching our every move.

[–] kokesh@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

The world is going to shit

[–] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Is Australia trying to out-OSA the UK here? Steam is a fucking store front, GitHub is a place where you put Code, and Under Sixteens shouldn't be allowed on Dating Apps anyway. What the fuck?

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I mean, Steam does have a large social aspect as well. Community content is often aimed at the 16+ crowd. Hell, I’ve been called the n-word by 11 year olds multiple times on Steam. Denying that Steam has social media is just disingenuous.

Uhuh, and who uses steam as a social media site in practice outside of comments in the workshop?

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Steam has the Community where user interaction and user generated content can be posted.

[–] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

By that logic the following sites are social media sites:

  • Wikipedia
  • OpenStreetMap
  • News sites with comment sections
  • Duolingo
  • Amazon

God help you if they agegate Wikipedia because that's the point you bring out the pitchforks.

[–] Gold_E_Lox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago

youre making the common mistake of thinking these laws are coherent

[–] DFX4509B@lemmy.wtf 1 points 1 week ago

Good luck age-gating the local copies of Wikipedia for anyone who downloaded it.

[–] FireWire400@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Doesn't it already include YouTube and TikTok?

Edit: Yes, it does. Misleading title is misleading.

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

That is a list of things that are social media, or have aspects of the platform that are social, and contain UGC.

[–] answersplease77@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

And Pornhub
