This Columbus Day, we honor his life with reverence and gratitude, and we pledge to reclaim his extraordinary legacy of faith, courage, perseverance, and virtue from the left-wing arsonists who have sought to destroy his name and dishonor his memory.

Just over 2 months later, on October 12, 1492, Columbus made landfall in the modern-day Bahamas. Upon his arrival, he planted a majestic cross in a mighty act of devotion, dedicating the land to God and setting in motion America’s proud birthright of faith.

Before our very eyes, left-wing radicals toppled his statues, vandalized his monuments, tarnished his character, and sought to exile him from our public spaces. Under my leadership, those days are finally over — and our Nation will now abide by a simple truth: Christopher Columbus was a true American hero, and every citizen is eternally indebted to his relentless determination

If you like this comment then I'm assuming you dislike the way the White House is attempting to frame history. If so then why aren't you also upvoting the post that would increase awareness of these actions?

As a note, I'm surprised so many of the replies are angry screaming about Columbus instead how official government communication is using such charged, and politically biased language.

I'm assuming it's because the post is neutral quotes not blind hate and instead of up voting for visibility you're upvoting positions you agree with and can't tell the political position of the post or are scared someone else might see an upvote as being aligned with the administrations actions, but let me know if I'm wrong

And if I'm right, isn't that just reinforcing most of the behaviour that makes social media, and their influence in politics so problematic. ie. amplified emotions, limited references to sources, and mobs. And aren't those problems / amplifications part of how the US is in its current situation so by taking actions like upvoting the angry reply but not the informative original post helping to consolidate those mechanisms?

Columbus was a fucking piece of shit. His legacy is genocide and chattel slavery.

That being said Trumps government has no policy except “hurt brown people” and “stir culture wars for distractions”. Ignore this shit and keep calling it Indigenous Peoples Day.

Jesus had a ThinBlueLine sticker on his wagon and saluted bald eagles in the name of USA when he wasn't telling darker people "if you don't like it, get out". That other god is demanding the same thing in Gaza, apparently.

Wow, they turned something most people couldn't give a shit about into a religious battle. Most people only cared about calling in Columbus Day because that is what they are used to calling it. Changing the name only annoyed them because it was a minor alteration in their language, and the alternative was a name that seemed too PC for them. They didn't hate it, but they didn't like it, either.

Now they are full on Christofascist about the name, turning someone who was seen as disgustingly bad even by the standards of his own time into some sort of saint.

I have seen a lot of online disourse in the past deriding columbus and columbus day but it never made me want to ditch it given the historical context of a lot of things but trump being all gung ho about it finally does.
