Saw a farmer walk out of the voting area at the polling place locally wearing an "I voted to Make America Great Again".

In Boston there’s a really low bridge on Storrow drive and there’s signs galore that trucks won’t fit under the bridge and there’s a whole catalog of pics of people who have gotten stuck or β€œstorrowed”

Ah, the good ol' 11 foot 6 story.

Part 2: Me as a child putting my bare hand on a hot iron. My entire hand was bandaged up.

I don't recall the pain, but the bandages lol

Did something similar... turned the electric stove on high, waited until coil was glowing red and then touched it with my finger. I still remember how excited I was waiting for it to glow! πŸ˜„

That finger has no normal fingerprint now - the ridges and swirls are gone. Kids are dumb.

My brother did the same thing with the cigarette lighter in our car when we were little. I don’t think that one ever grew a full fingerprint back πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

Nothing spectacular comes to mind, but I've seen a couple of drivers backing up on the motorway after missing their junction, so maybe that.

e: Dumbest thing I've done has to be dropping out of university out of spite.

Never too late to go back bro. I believe in you

Someone hopped a nearly 6 foot tall by 4 feet deep construction barrier blocking both ends of an out of service escalator, with multiple pallets or replacement escalator stairs stacked all around it. (The elevator was in service right by the escalator)

Anyways, they predictably fell through the massive hole in the escalator and cut their shins to ribbons on the exposed stairs. They then got to the bottom of the train station platform and were bitching about their legs. Eventually, they hailed a police officer just to bitch and whine further about their gouged shins. The officer had the grace to just listen to the guy and not call him a dumb motherfucker for hopping the multiple tall plastic barriers and signs. I was just shaking my head in amazement until my train came.

They're lucky that they didn't fall the 30-45 feet down to the train platform by hopping the construction barrier either.

Used new-fangled silicone based lube in the shower when it first came out years ago, without thinking clearly... Ended up with a broken rib and missing teeth. That shhh is slick on bathtubs...

[–] LowtierComputer@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

I'm really sorry about your teeth. That sucks!

I'm involved in both cases.

  1. I was the designated trip sitter while my friends came over and got high. One decided to make brownies and being too impatient to melt chocolate on the stove, put the metal pot in the microwave for a couple of minutes. The kicker is that this all unfolded in front of me; we were chatting and I was too distracted myself to give a second thought about metal in a microwave. Microwave survived, kitchen stunk to high hell of molten plastic handles, and the pot was thrown out.

  2. I attempted and failed to seal a leak in the middle of a pipe with teflon tape.

Gamble.

Gamble. Tried it out of curiosity when I turned 19, immediately lost my $20, never entered a casino again.

[–] sylver_dragon@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

immediately lost my $20, never entered a casino again.

You didn't lose it, you paid $20 for an education in why gambling in a casino is a bad idea. It could have been much, much worse.

[–] howrar@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Many pay a lot more without ever learning this lesson. I'd say it was money well spent.

[–] Cracks_InTheWalls@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Frankly, this is the best outcome. Going and winning a decent amount your very first time is a huge risk for developing a gambling problem, because your monkey brain goes "It happened once, so it can totally happen again". Doubly so when you're young and your 'decent amount' is lower than it might be otherwise.

It could, sure, but the actual probability doesn't line up with your probabilistic fluke, and that's a hard thing to overcome for a lot of folks.

Never got to a point where it was a survival threat (very lucky in that regard), but that $300 I won when I was 19 was the most expensive money I've ever made.

Better than the second-previous PM of the Netherlands, who fell doing that.

Blatantly stupid AND satisfying!
