Gamers think they hate video game companies, when they really just hate capitalism.

[–] BannedVoice@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So true, Nintendo, Disney, Nickelodeon, pretty much any institution I really looked up to as a kid has turned out to be pure evil.

[–] Volcanna@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nobody should ever look up to companies.

[–] BannedVoice@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago

I was a kid, what the hell did I know.

[–] steeznson@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Maybe they are just a company... Idk how people even developed a parasocial relationship with it

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 4 points 1 day ago

Because children are easily manipulated, and they'll carry that shit over into adulthood.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

because it made them feel feelings.

same reason anyone has any parasocial relationship. apparently people watch people stream or influence and develop feelings for them.

i don't personally expereince any of this so it bafflest he crap otu of me... but apparently that makes me mentally ill in the current technology economy where it's considered 'normal' to gift people 100/1000s of dollars to listen to them whine online.

at least with Nintendo I am playing for a console and a game to play. not for the experiencing of living viscerally though somebody else.

Nintendo, you mean the law firm?

It's debatable if Larian is AAA, imo they are not but if you consider them then you found one yes

[–] Sickday@kbin.earth 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's debatable if Larian is AAA

What's debatable about Larian being a AAA studio?

[–] alphabethunter@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They are not that big, and they are independent. Larian has less than a 1000 employees, while the likes of Ubisoft number in the multiple thousands.

[–] Sickday@kbin.earth 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ubisoft is a publisher, not a game dev studio. They publish games made by their child studios. They don’t produce games themselves.

Larian has less than a 1000 employees

Yes, they have 500 employees which would be quite large for an Indie development studio.

DICE (studio behind the Battlefield games), for example, has 700 employees. CD Project RED, (Cyberpunk, Witcher games), has 615 employees.

If budget is the qualifier for AAA, Larian has put out multiple massive budgeted games in both BG3 and Divinity 2. I’m not sure which metric would disqualify Larian as being a AAA studio.

[–] Volcanna@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

To me Larian would be a AA studio.

Ubisoft is a publisher, not a game dev studio. They publish games made by their child studios. They don’t produce games themselves.

Ubisoft Paris Mobile, Ubisoft Ivory Tower, Ubisoft Nadeo, Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft Owlient, Ubisoft Da Nang, Ubisoft Paris, Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Quebec, Ubisoft Annecy, Ubisoft Chengdu, Ubisoft San Francisco, Ubisoft Milan, Ubisoft Mumbai, Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Mainz, Ubisoft Bordeaux, Ubisoft Montpellier, Ubisoft Singapore, Ubisoft Saguenay, and Ubisoft Bucharest to name a few are Ubisoft and they produce and publish games.

Yes, these are all their children studios. Ubisoft Entertainment (colloquially referred to as just Ubisoft), as an entity, is a video game publisher.

Does that make all their children studios AAA? A lot of them don't have massive employee numbers and their budget per game varies greatly lol.

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 1 points 7 hours ago

Yes. It does. Because they are all part of the corporate conglomerate known as : Ubisoft.

Just because they are "children studios" doesn't change that they are all under the same umbrella company.

[–] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

I'm not sure why you're latching onto that part of the argument, the point he's making is Larian is still relatively small and spends less on games then AAA studios.

Hello Games with No Man's Sky?

[–] SparroHawc@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

Hello Games is absolutely NOT a AAA company.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 39 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They have been for a long time now. They're only going to keep getting worse until someone or something stops them, and I can't see what that would be.

[–] stray@pawb.social 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I think we should support game development designed around "infringing" on some of their bullshit patents. I love Pokemon and they're doing fuck-all with the franchise, so I'd love to see more indie devs' takes on the concept. Have you seen all the really cool "fakemon" that have existed for decades on Deviant Art?

[–] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Coromon seems pretty similar, I only played a small portion so far though

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh there's more than just on DeviantArt, fan games like Pokémon Uranium are full of fakemons that can rival anything Nintendo is putting out.

[–] stray@pawb.social 9 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Yeah, but that's actual copyright infringement. I want more Palworlds and Cassette Beasts and Monster Sanctuaries, and I want them to be really blatant about things like summoning your monsters to ride them.

I just discovered the FOSS pokemon called tuxemon. https://tuxemon.org/

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 5 points 2 days ago

I just hope someone takes Nintendo to court over that latest bogus patent so it can get thrown out.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Romhacks are not copyright infringement if you don’t distribute the ROMs. They only distribute patch files and users need to acquire the ROMs through legal backups of their own copies of the original games. It is not illegal to patch software, and it is not illegal to distribute a detailed list of all the things you’d change about a copyrighted work in order to make it into something else.

[–] Visstix@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago (7 children)

A super villain? They aren't even the most evil gaming company.

[–] Nima@leminal.space 39 points 2 days ago (1 children)

they're pretty damned evil, dude. "but other companies are worse" doesn't take away from their shittiness.

[–] Visstix@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Well yeah but they are not sexual harassment evil or driving people to kill themselves evil are they?

[–] stray@pawb.social 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Adding to what Kolanaki said, these kinds of abuses are unfortunately pretty commonly unreported in Japan because of social pressure against the victim.

In particular there's a practice of mentally abusing workers until they resign to avoid firing them.

Sexism and homophobia are alive and well because they're rooted in a culture of conformity to social norms which punishes those who stand out.

And I don't mean to be xenophiobic about this; it's just information I've gotten from LGBT manga authors and the news. I in no way think there's anything inherently wrong with Japanese people or that their culture is without value. I don't really trust any large corporations to begin with.

[–] Visstix@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

That's fair. But that just makes them a standard evil corporation. I just mean to say that calling nintendo a supervillain is a hyperbole compared to companies actually doing crimes against humanity.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

They're a Japanese company, so chances are pretty high they do that, too. Especially the drive to suicide part.

[–] Visstix@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Hey if they are I will definitely put them up there with the most evil gaming companies. It's not why they are getting called a "supervillain" for that now though. I'm not defending them, just heard a lot worse from ubisoft or activision is all. Nintendo is definitely annoying the shit out of me though.

[–] Nima@leminal.space 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I can't tell if you're defending nintendo or not, man. I am weirded out by consumers defending multibillion dollar corporations.

[–] Visstix@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Nah my point was that nintendo is just your standard evil corporation. I think the super villain part is a bit of a hyperbole compared to say, amazon or nestle.

They are but keep it pretty well hidden

[–] jsomae@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There are a couple supervillains.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Its just 6 giant supervillains fighting each other over the ruins of tokyo. I think for a lot of people Nintendo is the favorite but if any of them win or if they stop fighting we all lose.

This is just how giant corporations work in markets. Its when they start working together to destroy the city that things get really bad. (Look at what tyson and cargill did to meat prices in the US, for instance).

And if you look at who is trying to do that, well which company has been buying up game companies with the hopes of corning the market on AAA titles?

🌍👨‍🚀🔫👨‍🚀

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think it's important to separate Nintendo's legal department from product development. While the products are expensive, they are high quality and are generally enjoyed by their target demographic. Their legal department is a supervillain, sure, but that's a separate thing entirely from the product development side IMO.

[–] Buffy@libretechni.ca 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I understand the sentiment, but why is this an important separation? The legal department speaks on behalf of Nintendo more than any other branch in the company. It's all a trickle effect from the higher ups and the type of culture they want to develop. As a consumer, whether or not their actions come from legal or product development, it should still reflect on the company as a whole and impact my decisions on what to spend my cash on.

You can obviously decide to buy whatever you want.

My point is that their legal team doesn't seem to impact their product development team much at all. Nintendo develops their IPs pretty consistently, so you're unlikely to get into a situation where they just sit on something and sue the crap out of anyone who tries to use their stagnant IPs.

Compare to Disney, who is more litigious and doesn't do a lot with their core IPs (when's the last time you saw Mickey Mouse star in a high profile film or game?).

If you like Nintendo products, the good news is they'll continue creating them. The bad news is mostly around preservation, Nintendo really wants you to hang on to old hardware if you want to play old games. They're also very touchy about how their IPs are represented in the media, so be very careful when you use them in a YT video or something.
