Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Wow, a Hades AND a Disco Elysium reference!

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 14 points 3 days ago

What is this? A crossover-DLC?

Wait do people actually give a shit about how Roman and greek gods are portrayed????

[–] isyasad@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's time to link my favorite 2 hour YouTube video: Why I haven't played Hades.
(Tldr: yes, some people do care. And actually for really deep and interesting reasons sometimes)

It's been a while since I've seen it and there's a LOT to the video but I remember the main argument being that the author of the video, who is Greek, feels that Greek mythology is often white-washed in popular media. Hades appears to be very superficially diverse by making the gods appear to be of various ethnicities, but it's a very Americanized portrait of diversity with one East-Asian, South-Asian, African, etc. characters and does not really depict any ethnically Greek characters despite there being a lot of diversity within Greece and (of course) despite the fact that most of the gods are supposed to be ethnically Greek. He has a particular gripe with the portrayal of Dionysus being portrayed as South-Asian because in actual Greek myth, Dionysus invaded India; so it's pretty insensitive for them to portray him as the victims of his mythological conquest.

There was a lot more to it than that and I don't agree with 100% of what he says, but it's a really interesting video and I broadly think he makes very good points.

I feel like a typical anglophone witch wouldn't care terribly much about ancient Greek gods.

[–] Darohan@lemmy.zip 15 points 3 days ago

Have you met a modern anglophone witch? Many of them follow nothing but ancient greco-roman gods. Celtic tradition is popular too, though.

what references am i supposed to get in order to find this funny? i think i'm missing like 5 references

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 32 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Bacchus is very fond of the alcoholic/drug addict protagonist of Disco Elysium, Harry DuBois because he's the god of drinking and parties.

I see! Now it makes more sense

In Hades 2 they made Zeus/poisedon/Hades father to be Chronos titan of time. In Greek myth their father is Kronus king of titans with absolutely no relation to the primordial god (which were embodiments of concepts like Gaia as earth) of time Kronos.

so what you are saying is there are many references i need to get to appreciate this shitpost, i see

I'm fine with it as long as people understand that no, your game or movie or whatever isn't an accurate source and that yes, some people may be uncomfortable seeing their deities portayed in such a way. Also with all this shit going on I don't think that a video game is going to be a god's main concern...
