AI or myostatin related muscle hypertrophy? Tigers are strong, but they have loose skin and don't look like that unless something is wrong.

[–] stray@pawb.social 42 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

I think they just look like that sometimes. I found a lot of images of tigers with significant definition until finding one I could identify.

This is Luca, and his profile doesn't say anything about a medical condition.

You can see videos of the cats here:

I think the lighting angle might be doing a lot of the work in the OP image.

e: I actually just want to share some tiger pictures because I like them.

I believe I read somewhere that animals don't need to exercise to have strong muscles. Human evolution on the other hand, prioritised endurance over strength. So when tigers or chimpanzees eat, the calories are used for muscles while humans have to actively exercise to get the same result.

[–] Contramuffin@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Humans also utilize a ton of their available calories to maintain their large brains rather than basically anything else in their body. We basically made a hyper minmax build

[–] stray@pawb.social 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They do need exercise to strengthen their muscles, but humans are designed to shed unused muscle way more readily than either tigers or chimpanzees. They need their strength to navigate their habitats and obtain future meals, while we're endurance predators capable of walking our prey to death even while emaciated. Excess muscle on a human is a waste of energy, so our bodies will happily scrap it all for free protein.

Any responsible animal-keeper will furnish the habitat with enrichment structures/items that will provide all the exercise their wards require. Poorly-kept animals (or especially lazy ones) will lose muscle tone and put on fat.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Yes that goes without saying.

But we won't see a gorilla being more active than necessary for gains. That's what I was trying to say.

One reason why I didn't go to any zoo in Japan while visiting.

Why are these tigers so hot!?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

every once in a while my fluffy kitty looks absolutely jacked (not to that extent, but super muscly) and she weighs like 10 pounds. runs around all fuckin day chasing greebles.

[–] cepelinas@sopuli.xyz 24 points 2 days ago

Probably not AI because there is an image match of this from 5 years ago.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

Doesn't look like it. Muscles are probably flexed due to his front leg doing the curl pose.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That has to be painful for them, right? My first instinct was to laugh but then I thought maybe that'd be mean to YACKED KITTY-BEAR

[–] stray@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago

The internet says it's generally harmless, but that it can be associated with other health problems depending on what's causing it.

[–] Rug_Pisser@piefed.zip 26 points 3 days ago

Do you even prowl, bro?

[–] Hikermick@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I read a book on rock climbing years ago that said the reason big cats in captivity were so toned was because they are constantly tensing their muscles. It's a display of dominance over other cats in the enclosure. The point being that rock climbing even though it doesn't provide cardiovascular exercise will tone the muscles.

[–] stray@pawb.social 7 points 2 days ago

The primary cause of hypertophy is mechanical tension, which is achieved by creating resistance against a muscle's force. Flexing is an isometric exercise, but doesn't provide much tension and therefore doesn't stimulate a lot of muscle growth. Climbing offers a ton of tension, both isometrically by holding up your body weight and isotonically by pulling up your body weight. Climbing is usually significantly anaerobic and will damage muscle fibers, which are two other stimulants of muscle growth.

Cardiovascular exercise is good for strengthening heart and skeletal muscles, but not for getting swole. If combined with good diet it can help reduce body fat percentage to achieve a more cut appearance.

Tiger uses all limbs to walk, we use only 2. No wonder that he has muscular front paws also.

[–] gothic_lemons@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Damn Tony, what in them flakes?

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

Pretty sure my male cat could take this sleeping mermaid

[–] three@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Do tigers also have barbed penises....?

[–] stray@pawb.social 8 points 2 days ago

They sure do, which is why we have to maintain self-control.

[–] MidsizedSedan@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

According to e216, they don't...

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

e216

Because of this comment, I learned that e216.com is for sale for around 3k USD. Holy carp, when did obscure, meaningless domain names get so expensive.

(It's e621 . com that puts canine dicks on everything, including cats, most definitely NSFW)

[–] stray@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago

No one seems to know how knots work either.

[–] thatradomguy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't get how people even have time to workout. My work is right next to a gym and I can see outside sometimes and the lot there is ALWAYS full. You would think I have the time to go myself but gotta commute and then do chores.... so nah.

[–] DontNoodles@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 days ago

Start with something small, being fit is not just about being jacked. After being like you, I've taken up the challenge of doing 10k pushups this year. It might sound like much but it only comes to around 30 per day. You just have to be consistent. I'm on day 84 today and have only missed one day so far. I have begun adding skipping a rope on days that I can. I'm already seeing improvement in my posture and back ache and that alone keeps me motivated.

My motivation was this post: https://wjgilmore.com/articles/10000-pushups

You can do it too. I believe in you.

Maybe the furries were onto something after all... /j

Your history was disappointing after reading this

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 2 points 2 days ago

What have I said that is so unappealing? I can see why you'd dislike me not hating snap but other than that..?

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 days ago

It was a joke.

[–] FreeBeard@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

You misunderstood the "Men or Bear" question. It isn't about having more muscle than the bear. It is just about begin nice.
