Sold 10 years old 8*2GB DDR 4 for 50 euros just a few days ago. They didn't even ask, just straight buy in minutes of posting. I was expecting some negotiation and selling by 35-40.

The same kit I sold is now being purchased for 65 euros.

I am trying and failing to get any 16GB DDR4 for €35, so that checks out.

For now, say hello to OOM killer.

Earlier this year I was considering upgrading my desktop to 64GB, but didn't want to upgrade straight from 32GB to 64GB because I was using DDR4. If I was gonna buy an upgrade I wanted it to be to DDR5, but that would have involved a processor and motherboard upgrade that would have cost almost $500 combined (including the RAM). Ultimately I decided against it because of the cost (I don't actually need a processor upgrade) and figured I'd buy down the line when I needed to.

Now the RAM alone is the cost of the entire upgrade. Bonkers.

I'm debating scrapping my homelab and hoping to retire, one of my servers has 768 GB, most of which isn't assigned to any VMs...

my wife and i would like to marry your server

I recently upgraded and have put a classified ad for 16gb of ddr4 (so-dimm), for what seemed a fair price. It didn't even get a single fucking view.

Nobody wants to buy secondhand RAM. Too big of a risk that it won't work

Well, they are flying on the second hand market where I live.

Also, I might be wrong, but RAM tends to just work or just fail, and there are 48 ~~euros~~ hours of return period in the platform I use.

Bad RAM can also sometimes cause your OS to be unstable, but it's hard to notice if it isn't bad enough to make your computer crash often

Fair enough

[–] Bourff@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I get that, but with the current prices I thought it might change if you're on a budget.

Yeah you're right I guess. For me buying or selling secondhand components has always been a massive pain in the arse. Sold a graphics card and the buyer wanted a warranty....

When I refused he wanted me to install it for him.

That's where I might be wrong. I put them at 80€, a bit below the others ads for the same thing.

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

"fair" my asshole. That shits worth no more than 50€ if new. No more than 25€ if used.

[–] Bourff@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Calm down and please stay polite. When that's the listed price by most other sellers, you'd be stupid to ask for a third of it. Now if that doesn't sell then yeah it's probably overinflated. But how would I know beforehand?

[–] Jyek@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Worth to you is different than worth to the market of buyers. Clearly people feel it is worth more than what they are buying it at because they are buying it quickly without negotiation having anticipated a higher price. The highest bidder determines what a commodity is worth.

I bought 32gb RAM last year to get my desktop to 64gb for work but now I use a work provided laptop. Genuinely considering selling off 32gb of it.
